Tonight: ADVENTUREing with EAR PWR

Tonight: ADVENTUREing with EAR PWR

August 28, 2008 by Svetlana Send to a Friend Send to a Friend

As you may have noticed we have taken to doing little show recommendations on an almost daily basis.
Because we love you like that.
And we don’t want you to miss a thing.
Today’s pick is all the more important because you probably HAD NO IDEA IT WAS HAPPENING.
So you actually were in danger of missing it.

Cutting to the chase: tonight, at Velvet Lounge (which is now better than ever) everyone should convene for what will probably turn into the coolest, nerdiest, catchiest dance show party ever.

2 Bands:
one with all the buzz a band playing at Velvet Lounge can have: Adventure, with its so-hip-to-be-square Carpark pedigree (you know, the DC label that puts out everyone from Panda Bear to Beach House that everyone thinks is located in Baltimore-BUT ISN’T), its nintendo theme song anthems, forever-14 attitude, and its buzz buzziness (look no further than Greg’s blog for some more words and tunes) and a plentitude of animated gif graphics to last him a lifetime.

This is him:

the other band on the other hand I am here to vouch for fully so come early for them
I saw EAR PWR at random one Monday at Velvet (if you want to experience independent music at its most independent that is where you go: to Velvet on a rainy Monday. Nowhere else) and was promptly blown away.

I quote (my own self):
with Photos from Raisa.

EAR PWR

Right as EAR PWR (a duo from North Carolina) was setting up (not on the stage but mid room, and out of a suitcase), Allison from Hot Lava came and introduced herself and when we asked her about the upcoming band (they played with them in Baltimore the night before) she said:

They’re really good. They dance a lot.

Which Basically sums them up.
As does this photo I snatched of them from their Myspace.

Seriously people, EAR PWR is the shit.
(how often do I say that? NOT THAT OFTEN, REALLY).
This teeny tiny girl with a bleach blonde mop of hair sings/raps/enthuses about roller skating, water parks, space and her Cat (She is a BITCH) and this kid with a crazy ass fro twiddles some suitcase knobs and runs around with a megaphone. AND EVERYONE DANCES WITH THEM. Seriously.
Like, I was sitting on a chair, being an old woman on a Monday, that I am, and the whole space was vibrating from the 20 people in the room going bananas.

It could be annoying (it maybe is annoying) but it is also seriously the most brilliant operation in the world.
Whatever they’re selling, I am buying.

So, yes, GO THERE TONIGHT and thank us tomorrow.

Adventure was one of the highlights at this year’s Whartscape. Fun time guaranteed.

Benny rocks. And not just because he wears a junk-accenting unitard every performance (he’s working on that).

This was the best act that has come to dc for so long and hardly anyone showed (Whatever MORE FOR ME). It was all that I expected/wanted and then some.

Also, Adventure dude was totally uncomfortable. Something was happening with his equipment that was making him SO UPSET. No one noticed, but he was so angry that he cut and ran before it was supposed to be over.

Didn’t stay for the last set but who cuurrrez, Ear Pwr was worth everything.
