It is Tuesday! As a bonus, today, 147 years a go, the Mexican army (unexpectedly) beat out the (for 50 years undefeated) French forces in the battle of Puebla. TODAY IS NOT AN OBLIGATORY HOLIDAY IN MEXICO BTW (the actual Mexico Independence day is September 16th), however, in America, the country really needed a day to drink Margaritas with abandon and so it was decided that today is the day to celebrate Mexican culture and heritage.
Here is a sprinkling of Cinco de Mayo parties across the city, courtesy of Washintonian, Going Out Gurus, my facebook invites and Greg’s list, all of which combined may actually lead you down the right path. Swine flu be damned.
Ready?
- Aside from C.U.N.T, which is not necessarily Mexico themed (but is definitely drinking themed) party @ Wonderland, the only other full-on hipster (shudder) bacchanalia tonight is A very funky Cinco de Mayo @ Velvet Lounge. Which will be fun.
Then,
- DC’s Hispanic Bar Association is sponsoring a party @ Park on Fourteenth which is a place to both love and hate but there is an open beer bar form 5 to 6, free food till seven, patron special, don julio shot specials and there is no cover, so it may all be worth it (more details here)
- The AWESOME Mariachi band that is at Haydee’s on Weekends has a special concert planned for tonight (plus, the fiesta margaritas there make any day a holiday). Starts at 930 pm. (more details here)
- If you want to feel good about drinking on a Tuesday, head to Chi Cha where Hope House is hosting a Cinco de Mayo themed happy hour and charity auction. Starts at 6. (more details here)
- If in Georgetown, Mate is hosting some kind of a bizzaro Mexico/Japan combo of an evening but there is free DosEquis to be consumed, and their margaritas are delicious and since all this is for show really, you may as well eat some sushi if you feel like it. (more details here)
- Dan Amatai is also hosting a party @ Modern that same night so, while in Rome….
- Up Georgia avenue, Austin Grill shuts down a street in Silver spring for a festival of (chain restaurant) sorts (more details here)
- There is a costume party @ Rosa Mexicana involving collectible taquila shot glasses (more details here)
OR
- Just be like: eff this, and go see Max Tundra and Junior Boys, just like you planned.
Further suggestions welcome in comments. As always.
And now, go and make some bad decisions.

Yes to Junior Boys, and then it’s party time.
May 5, 2009 at 11:53 amCinco de Mayo may not be Independence Day (though the people that import Corona into the US like to pretend that it is) but it IS a national holiday: no Banks, no schools (maybe Alliance Francaise opens in defiance) and in the case of 2009, a mandatory “puente” due to H1N1, and not so much Zaragoza’s army.
May 5, 2009 at 11:57 amI think I’m just going to make margaritas at home and rent “La Bamba” in all of its Lou Diamond Phillips-isn’t-Mexican-but-who-cares glory.
May 5, 2009 at 2:12 pmI just saw this. Thanks for the mention, Svetlana!!

They should do like China: wait for the parties to get in full force and then round up all the Mexicans and quarrantine them.
Of course no Mexicans will be at these events since they’re all for hipster assnecks, but still…
