In case You need a fix, while they repair the new particle accelerator at CERN….
Wednesday:
>> Brainiacs, unite. Then, head to the Natural History Museum’s Baird Auditorium at 7 p.m. to witness astronomer Rocky Kolb, particle physicist Joe Lykken, and cosmologist Michael Turner seriously geeking out. They will “debate what dark matter and dark energy are, and discuss upcoming research, including how accelerators, particle detectors, and telescopes will be used to determine what the 96% unseen portion of the Universe is.” Tickets for The Dark Side of the Universe: Dark Matter and Dark Energy
cost $20 or $10 for students with valid ID;
call 202-633-3030 for more info.
Cale, I’ve heard this lecture in a slightly different form in the past and it’s well worth it. You’ll enjoy it. As the universe expands, the pace of acceleration increases until the nighttime sky is black and starlight nonexistent. We’ll be swallowed by the Sun buy then, though, so don’t fret. Good stuff!
September 23, 2008 at 4:12 pmby then, I mean. I won’t speculate on the purchasing power of the sun, although Henry Paulson may be pondering a bail out as we speak.
September 23, 2008 at 4:33 pmReading a book now about how the constants of the universe may not be so constant after all. Perhaps the dark matter/energy problem isn’t a problem at all and it’s our theory of gravity that’s flawed.
Sun’s got another 5 billion years my friend, you have a lot of faith in humans. Even if we don’t kill each other first, surely a meteorite or virus will before the sun eats us!

Fair point. To be clear, I’m not so sanguine about human life on earth beyond about 10k years or so, but life in general yes, especially viruses. Life stripped of all but the bare essential: a double helix. That’s the way to roll.
Oh, and I worry about you, my friend. I think your pessimistic view of humanity’s survival horizon may be due, in part, to reading BYT comments all day? ;) Just lookin’ out for your mental health, Cale.
September 23, 2008 at 6:51 pmJesus is going to strike everyone in the building dead.
September 23, 2008 at 7:56 pmCale, are you gonna review this for BYT? If not, can you write up a review and just email it to me?
I wanna but i don’t have a babysitter.
September 24, 2008 at 11:46 amUnfortunately the new band I’m in, Family Matters, has a show tonight at 8pm at Big Bear Cafe, so I can’t make it. I would recommend going to this over seeing Family Matters though. Cause we aren’t very good. Especially the parts where I play.

Is it pathetic that I’m more excited to go to this than Cut Copy on Friday? And I love me some Cut Copy.
