Hot Lava Love

Hot Lava Love

July 23, 2008 by Svetlana Send to a Friend Send to a Friend

(we ran this initially a few months a go, but not nearly enough of you read it. shame on you.)

Tomorrow, DC9 is hosting a night of such spunky, stylized, high energy pop that you may as well just give up now and start preemptively smiling.

Spearheading the lineup are Richmond’s Hot Lava, whom I first laid my ears on a few months a go and have not looked back since.

Formed 3 years a go out of a bunch of graphic design and film students (How predictable-Allison tells me over the phone. How wonderful-I think over the phone) who in the meantime learned how to play instruments together, used ipods instead of keyboards in line up changing times, and went through probably 9 different reiterations only to churn out a complete gem of noisy, clever, clever, CLEVER pop of an album called LAVALOGY that has just seen the light of day.

They play Richmond all the time (Thankfully, no one seems to be really sick of us yet-Allison laughs) but this weekend they churned out their first mini NE tour and after NYC, Philly, and Baltimore last night they land into the District TONIGHT.

Listen to the listening party and go.

BRAINEX

Allison: We had a few lame tracks that almost made it onto our new CD. Jared put the heat on me to write another hit as a replacement for one of them. I had written Brainex like 6 months earlier but thought it was weak at the time. We tuned it up and it worked out. The intro is the old version of the song…total electrocheese.

Jared: This song makes me feel like I’m watching Josie and the Pussycats.

Andrew: I never thought about the word “yeah” much before, but now it’s one of my favorites.

APPLE OPTION FIRE

Allison: This song’s not as nonsensical as you think. It’s not really about computers either. By the way, Stephanie Fairbairn is the best Tuba Player I’ve ever known. She goes to Yale for it after all.

Jared: I’m really glad we have a song you can make jazz hands to.

Andrew: The song quenches my secret desires to polka my eyes out.

IGGY

Allison: There is a “ghost” buried deep within the different levels of this song. While mixing this tune, we came across this mysterious track that we didn’t remember recording. Upon investigation, it was a
clip of some weird crackling, talking noise that sounded like the grudge. We didn’t delete it…

Jared: This song made Allison’s Mom cry– are there any other good songs about a dog? I found out “Oh Mandy” isn’t actually about a dog.

Andrew: The real Iggy did run away for a day a few months after we recorded this and I was sure she got the idea from us.

RESOLUTIONS

Allison: This song made the omnichord a star and paints a really nice picture of all of our combined bad habits. Resolutions are made to be broken.

Jared: More fun SHOULD be a New Year’s Resolution.

Andrew: I don’t know about you guys, but all my resolutions fell apart right around February.
