Events This Week for Haiti Relief

January 18, 2010 by Svetlana

In the last couple of days, after the Haiti devastation, it has been great to see local businesses rally to offer support. And while there is talk of the donations being bottlenecked and ineffective at this point, it is important to know that the effort continues this week with a number of events. Here is a handy guide of benefits we’ve heard about throughout the week. Click on links for more details and if you know of more, please post the details in the comments:

Washington DC’s own Spelling for Bees (music collective) @ Velvet Lounge
Monthly Residency (1st Tues)

Washington, DC – January 13, 2010 – DC Indie music collective, Spelling for Bees,

“If you’re not entirely sure where you’re going, it can’t hurt to take stock of where you’ve been.”

This very Groundhog Day, with that advice in mind, the Spelling For Bees musical collective will take a
break from peering into the mists of its own future and peer into the haze of DC’s musical past, specifically
the part that centered around Don Zientara’s living room in the 1980s.
At 7:30pm on Feb. 2nd, at the Velvet Lounge, at 915 U St. NW, the songs of Minor Threat and Fugazi will be reworked, re-imagined, replayed, butchered, exalted, deconstructed, reconstructed, and launched pell-mell into the
audience in all sorts of forms familiar and unfamiliar by the 50-odd members of Spelling For Bees, in various
and perhaps improvised combinations.
Expect horns, expect drums, expect strings, expect a five-dollar cover charge, expect an evening of experimentation, expect irreverence, reverently rendered, and expect all proceeds to be donated to disaster
relief efforts in Haiti.
