(Rick sent us this note yesterday urging us to go, and you know, since Rick REALLY knows his stuff (just click on his byline to see what we are talking about), we figured you deserve to know too (even if it is competing with the also bound to be delightful Vivian Girls/Crystal Stilts @ DC9-ed)
Tonight @ The Cat is going to be one of the most talked about shows of the year.
Seriously.
Ian McKaye will be there.
Probably all the other Fugazi guys too.
And scores upon scores of DC punk, post-punk and avant-pop fans.
So what’s the dealio you might be asking?
The Ex are a legendary Dutch punk band that have been putting out records since the late 70s. They started out as a straight-down-the-pipe punk band, but as time went on, they evolved their sound substantially (and in my view, this is where the band got interesting). They opened their sound up to include a lot of non-traditional rock instruments, got much experimental with the guitars…and even started working with unusual musicians that have nothing to do with rock music.

Case in point: Getachew Mekuria, a legendary Ethopian jazz saxophonist, will be playing on stage with The Ex at the Cat. It’s going to be crazy insane and probably will sell out. Check out the guitar attack of this band here—they rival Andy Gill from Gang of Four:
And in case you were curious, here’s the band with Getachew working on material together:
The always good Shortstack rounds out the eclectic bill.
Don’t say we did not tell you about it.

Getachew means “their master”.
