Enid: This is so bad it’s gone past good and back to bad again.

Today, in the spirit of this weekend, and all things young and angsty and (hilariously) pretentious, I am writing a fully obsessed “Ghost World” Best Weekend Bets.
You remember this movie.
You may have read the comic back in high school, but then in 2001, Thora Birch just came off of “American Beauty”, Scarlett Johansson’s dead-fish face could still be attributed to youthful naivete, “American Splendor” make sequential artists all cool again and Steve Buscemi was at a pinnacle of his middle-aged loser persona: not too old yet, but old enough to be seriously creepy and yet really sad at the same time. Just like that guy you know, you know.
The lead characters, Enid and Rebecca, pretty much epitomise the spirit of all things SUMMER (ART) CAMP this week too (even if they actually suck at art, its ok, most people in art schools do too, trust me). They’re young, they thing they’re too smart and too cool for everything that surrounds them and yet they have enough potential to make it to #1 girlfriend material, on the only list that counts around these parts. And that was pretty good world to be in for a while.
Anyway, get your quilt on and lets go make fun of some people this weekend. It will be ok as long as you deep down realize you may actually be more pathetic than them.
THURSDAY
Metric is sold out so the only TRULY unmissable thing is Nouvelle Vague at Maison Francaise.
This is a show by French people making light of English speaking music, in the best imaginable way, in an Embassy setting. Its more of a cabaret than a show, really. I went to see them there 3 or so years a go and they had middle aged diplomats dancing in the aisles chanting to “Too Drunk to Fuck” and it was amazing.
In other news: Brazilian night happens tonight as well and if you’d prefer to not wake up with a soul destroying hangover tomorrow (loser) then may I recommend the very solid Cotton Jones/The Antlers bill @ IOTA.
If it doesn’t rain – go see Ghostbusters.
DON’T go see Huey Lewis. PROMISE?
OK.
Enid: That’s not true. I just hate all these extroverted, obnoxious, pseudo-bohemian losers.

FRIDAY
People should really not go out on Fridays.
I mean this.
Unless something unstoppably amazing is taking place just stay home, catch up on DVR, be horizontal with someone and get some good night’s rest before all that finger painting and collaging and giant horn blowing that awaits you on Saturday.
IF YOU MUST socialize, and some people MUST:
-Tig Notaro is in town. And hilarious.
-Jason seems pretty excited for LODA
-The Black Cat hosts some really good local bands
-And Beautiful swimmers are @ Comet. Actually fudge what I said earlier: go out, see Beautiful swimmers at Comet and dance a bunch.
Rebecca: I didn’t really get it either.
Enid: Everyone’s too stupid.

SATURDAY
If you don’t come to the pool you kinda suck.
This week there are more ridiculous things than ever, two of the coolest bands we’ve seen in a while, plus if you missed last week you missed seeing the inflatable swan, and if you’ve missed the inflatable swan, then, lets face it, you have not lived.
After that:
-insane art party @ Velvet
-cool art party @ Hounshell (keep the spirit of art camp alive!)
-cool and free but completely sold out show @ RNR
-cool show @ Comet
-FATBACK (you will die dancing and you will love every second of it)
-afterhours, as per usual, with chrisburnsdc.com and co.
and I am sure some other stuff I am forgetting now.
Rebecca: We should follow him home.

SUNDAY
Phoenix is completely and irrevocably sold out as is WAR, so-bahambag.
But-Camera Obscura tickets are still available and Chris Burns is at coolout (though i guess you have to RSVP now or something, find them on facebook) AND from what I understand, IT IS FATHER’S DAY IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
So-call your dad. Make him a mix cd, you’ll be surprised as to how cool his music taste STILL is.
OK-I think that’s it.
Let me know what I missed…right…about…now.
Shopping for Father’s Day is the worst. I sent my dad an old timey telegram.

Svetlana, I adore you. You just made my (rainy) day. ‘Ghost World’ is a thing of beauty–the opening alone, with the fake all-girl rap group and the girl on the wheelchair is pure genius.
