Best Weekend Bets

Best Weekend Bets

May 21, 2009 by Svetlana

Now, I, myself, have never seen Side Out, the seminal beach volleyball vehicle starring C.Thomas Howell and that blonde dude from Thirtysomethings and Singles, but I was assured yesterday, just after midnight that this is THE beach volleyball movie of ALL beach volleyball movies and as such there is no way the Memorial day weekend Best Bets could have anything else but this movie as a theme.
Are we all in agreement on that?

You can watch it in full on youtube too

Now-since it is the long weekend you belong to one of the 2 groups:
1. the people that are going to the beach
2. the people that are not going to the beach (which can then be further divided into 2 subgroups of people who: a. claim they don’t want to go to the beach (but are lying to themselves, because, lets face it, everyone loves the beach) and b. people who openly wish they were at the beach and are sort of grumpy all weekend since they are stuck in the swamp crotch land that is DC?

I am going to the beach and therefore am in a good mood today.
Really good mood.
Having said that-it is not that there aren’t things I would not enjoy doing if I was in town and they are, as follows:

THURSDAY
Now-everyone with half a brain is taking Friday off and making it a 4-day weekend so treat today accordingly.
Casper Bangs is playing their first show @ the Cat and after you’ve reunited with people you haven’t seen since….oh 2007? It is time to hit the floor running at dance:

-there is always Brazilian night (Neal is back)
and LIV is hosting the first ever James Brown vs. Stevie Wonder jammy jam which looks fun. I hope they play “Part time Lover” 18 times. (I know they won’t)

FRIDAY

2 shows:
The Undeniable Annie Clark as St. Vincent is at the Black cat. The Black cat spontaneously combusts when faced with this much beauty and talent.
and the EXACTLY/EAR PWR/ADVENTURE trifecta hits Comet. Comet hopefully survives.

Afterwards: dance at kicks or drink free remy martin’s @ Girls on Top.

For nostalgia fiends that are not afraid of admitting to spending Friday night in a park in Rosslyn- 16 candles is on. Hot stuff.

SATURDAY
Own someone on court and off.
Be outside all day.
Ride your awesome new bike.
Call Joel to build you one if you don’t have one.

Then really lots of good shows: Juan McLean and The Field co-headline the Cat (Juan is awesome and has a horrible track record in terms of attendance in DC so people-GO), Jukebox the ghost is @ RNR and the debauch duo of Ra Ra Rasputin and Spiritual Machine is at DC9.

+ Bliss, Hometown Heroes and a very special weekend edition of Bee’s Knees featuring Nihilitia and Sara’s hair fan @ Velvet.
FACES MELT EVERYWHERE.

SUNDAY
Rumor has it the Counter Culture festival is today.
GO.
Also-National sold out all of 930 club again, but then, what else is new?

Bonus: Rian Johnson stops by for a very special screening of Brothers Bloom, a movie I am so excited to see it is not even funny.

MONDAY
Grill.
drink.
nap.
repeat.

Here (unrelated to Sideout but related to Courtney Thorne-Smith who IS in Sideout) is a Melrose Place inspirational video for that:

Now-you tell me what we missed. I won’t care. I’ll be at the beach.

For all heading to St Vincent:

Don’t miss openers Lo Moda. They are one of Baltimore’s finest, most mature and realized musical acts. You won’t regret coming early.
