BYT Empire

Brightest Young Things

When you think about it - it was inevitable. One of these weeks I would look deep inside my tartan mini skirt wearing, belly bearing teenage heart and decide to do an "Empire records" themed BEST WEEKEND BETS.
And today is that day/week/end.

Anyway, lets start out with this:

Ok-now that the mood is set (Rory Cochrane was and is my ongoing dancing inspiration) lets get down to business:

THURSDAY
Tons of good stuff.
Maybe start out with something classy: like Pinkline's Art Registry exhibit opening or that cool Keith Hering movie @ Hirshhorn or Alliance Francaise's Soiree carte blanche happy hour (tonight at the Mexican cultural institute) and then slightly buzzed from the good times and cocktail conversations maybe hit up a show:

I keep amping up the Travis experience but apparently the rest of the BYT editorial staff thinks this makes me old or lame or old and lame or something, so for all you young and too cool for "Flowers in the Window" people Ponytail is in town at DC9. If you HAD a ponytail ever - then you should DEFINITELY go.

Also-wings are getting eaten and bee's are getting kneed and fly girlz are being fly with fatback boys.

Alternatively stay in and watch 30 Rock and Harper's Island, a MYSTERY EVENT.

A.J.: Mark, listening to this crap is guaranteed to make you sterile.
Mark: [under his breath] Maybe I want to be sterile.

FRIDAY
OK-Writing about Thursday left me tired.
So, lets keep Friday simple: Go to Velvet Lounge for the first day of DNA test and then go to 411 Warehouse and have Beautiful swimmers and Tim Sweeney make you wish you had 4 legs so you could dance twice as hard.

SATURDAY
DON'T GO TO BED. JUST GO FROM 411 to the all important AEROBICS DANCE PARTY WHICH starts at an ungodly early hour. Listen to Olivia Newton John en route to GET PUMPED.

Collapse in bed.
Rise and shine around 4pm and then go to either DNA Fest day 2 or to the 2ND Bored of trade Bonanza.
Follow that up with more fashion
and end the night @ any of the many dance parties you know and love or at the bound to be good for your soul Bowerbirds and Bell show @ RNR.

In between events practice telling someone off:

SUNDAY
OK-so we've made it this far.
Normally I suggest staying in on Sundays, resting, reading a book (OR THE NEW BELIEVER-the new issue is film themed and all sorts of amazing) BUT this time around there is actually way too many cool Sunday things to do:Jeremy Jay is in town (playing somewhat fascinatingly with EXACTLY) as is Mason Jennings as is Julie Doiron.

Pick your poison.
Just remember (start at 9th second):

Mark: Hey, Lucas. I've decided I'm going to start a band.
Lucas: The first thing you need is a name. Then you'll know what kind of band you've got.
Mark: Right, right. I was thinking about, um, Marc. How does that sound?
Lucas: Is that with a C or with a K?
Mark: Well my name is with a
[checks his nametag]
Mark: K, so I was thinking my band's name could be with a C. That way it's kind of that psychedelic, you know, trip thing.
Lucas: Always play with their minds.

YOUR TURN NOW

God loves a cheerful giver.

Stretch that weekend into Monday for the final installment of the Sad Crocodile residency at Solly's. Jamie and Mike from Greenland doing the Sleeping Bag ting and Dan from Deleted Scenes doing a rare solo turn plus a limited edition record release (3 EP's simultaneously!) from Sad Crocodile.

Not to mention kick ass tunes in-between all night.

Shameless I know.

It stretches the definition of DC, no doubt, but in Fairfax City there's 'Avant Fairfax', 6pm-1am on Saturday. Over 10 bands, a lot of avant-garde (obviously) electronic, rock, weird, local, non-local, etc. Plus artwork.

http://www.myspace.com/avantfairfax for the listing/infos.

Speaking of stretching the weekend until Monday, my new weekly w/Scottie B continues at the Zodiac for FREE with LA's Staccato (DJ Gina Turner and Louisahhh!). For all the Baltimoreans and inbetweenies who check the site, come through! And see everyone this Saturday at Sonar...
