Brightest Young Things

thumbbetting.jpg

You can tell this weekend is a busy one because the next 3 days on the calendar take up half the BYT homepage by now.
So, aren't you glad you have us to help you weed through it all?

Anyhoo, here are our best bets for irresponsible decision making this weekend.
Other (probably more legit) options are available in our calendar-read it religiously.
If we missed anything, well, you can always let us know.

Thursday

OK, so first things first: the possibilities for free wine and treats abound up and down and around U street during Mid City Third Thursdays. Make the most of it.

Then 2 great live shows: Gruff Rhys @ The Hotel (whose interview we are extra super eagerly expecting back) and Metric/Crystal Castles @ 930 Club which should be pretty much the very definition of my new defining term that is "sassy as fuck" (I promise to find a new one next week)

Alternatively: Neville Chamberlain (aka Neal of SOM Records) is throwing his first Brazilian Rhythms party at ST. Ex. Now, 2 of my best friends in college were Brazilian (and so was Haley up until she turned 21 and got a proper ID) so I've been (to Brazil) , and I am a fan: its all about impulse swimsuit purchases, meat, caipirinhas, mooning bouncers and not sleeping until 6 am because of dancing in totally inappropriate outfits. Now, I cannot promise this will be like that but at least 50 people have emailed me with this flier thus far, so I want to believe.

Friday

Pink Returns to BeBar so go an get your biserious dance on with Cassidy, Austin and Dangerous Muse.
Or just go to the Cat and once again stand in a giant line to get into CRAP which still stands as the only night I cannot get myself in because the backstage door keeper always says: "Svetlana, its not you, but if I let you in, those people (fingers pointed to a maddening crowd waiting outside) will kill me".
Drinking in the red room is just as fun tho.
Especially if I get to play the Ronnettes while there's still room for interpretative dancing.

Saturday

First off Bingo Brunch is back and not only run by the ever-delightful Ashley May (who is also the mastermind behind our beauty column it is Matt Berger's (of the Whips and general awesomeness) birthday-so show some love.

And later on: Big Night at the Cat Bliss Celebrates 7 years of existence downstairs (with apparently a plant-peeing-dream of an afterparty later on) and Robbers on High Street and Telograph play upstairs. You could still go for free

Alternatively:
Bishop Allen and John Vanderslice at the Hotel. One of these days we will marry Bishop Allen (yes, the whole band). Mark our words.

and

Ra Ra Rasputin the band by the one and only person alive named Brock Boss is playing Velvet Lounge and they are kind of awesome. In a sort-of-inexplicably mesmerizing way.

Sunday

Sleep.
or if you have Kings of Leon tickets-good for you.

God loves a cheerful giver.

If you showed up at a decent hour you could get into CRAP.

Also it's my birthday, so you have to.

Telograph should have 1/4 of the Buzz that GT had ("had" because I hope it won't have the same, nor will it, judging by the comment section), but they don't. Goddamned shame.

Also on Sunday the Washington Opera is offering a free simulcast of La Boheme on the Mall at 2 pm. Christ woman, I thought you were an Opera fan.

It will be simulcast to 31 colleges and universities, the Mall, AFI and the Old Town Theater in Alexandria.

Watch Mimi croak of the consumption.

I was a national opera trivia champion in middle school!

(did I just admit to this? in public?)

For some reason I thought the simulcast is next week.
Adding to the calendar promptly.
Gentlemen, prepare your shoulders to be cried upon.

sadly, there is more than one brock boss in the world because this is not my roommate: http://www.brockboss.net/

but he's the best brock boss so you should still go see ra ra rasputin.

"Gentlemen, prepare your shoulders to be cried upon" Isn't the typical BYTer too cool for Opera?

typical schmypical.

Svet, that's hot
opera buffs? yes!
15-year full season veteran subscriber to the Washington Opera checking in

if i wasn't being driven to VA Beach on Sunday for Shiny Toy Guns that night, i'd dig on some Boheme; then again nothing can top my favorite soprano, Veronica Villarroel, as Mimi

as for Crap, i don't want to miss any songs, showing up early; didn't know it was your birthday Michael
in your honor, i will don my Jem t-shirt and dance a proper night

the only songs songs i'll take a break from Crap for the Depeche Mode party are: Stripped, Rumours, Everything Counts, Strangelove, People are People, Never Let Me Down Again and Somebody

thank goodness for 2 parties at once in the Cat

the rapscallions currently residing at the Hosiery, "Fever", will also be playing with rasputin at velvet, exciting times indeed

Jeff when Ra Ra Rasputin and Brock Boss have hundreds of thousands of people listening to them 120 years after their debut then you can lump them together with la Boheme....

oh snap!
i *heart* Michael

Not that Ra Ra Rasputin and Brock Boss aren't any good...and I'll probably stop by.

am I the only one busting the ripped tights and docs (sorry Morgan) sunday night for the John Stabb Benefit at Rock N Roll Hotel? 75% of Government Issue will be playing, including Brian Baker - once of Minor Threat - now Bad Religion and Stabb too plus other bands with members that probably equal to at least 27% of other iconic punk bands

That is probably the best use of my name ever (see Jeff).
