Brightest Young Things

Ay.
A big one ahead, a weekend that in 3 short days will contain: dinosaurs, cowboys, drugs and designers who do them and a few other things like your standard issue shows, dance parties and/or fireside chats.
Saddle up.

THURSDAY
Big show day (most of which, somehow, miraculously, are not sold out for the first and only time this year in DC).

Hells bells if I know which you will pick:
-Black Lips
-Mathematicians
-Tindersticks with Dawn Landes
-Alice goddamn Russell
-Red Fang/Nihilitia....
I mean, whatever you (mis)tastes may be...there is something for you.

I'd go with Alice and/or Mathematicians, but I am I, and you ARE you.
For dancing and (appropriate romancing) I recommend Pigheading it at Dahlak.

Follow this advice:

FRIDAY
You guys, we're having a party.
Well, first it will be a movie (starts at 9:15, so there's room to eat dinner), and a great movie at that (look it up) and then the AFI lobby will become a haven of tee pee making out, wine chit chat and photo ops.
Last time we did was a BLAST. And this time its going to be better.
Cale will (skillfully) DJ.
I will (awkwardly) announce the movie.
Libby will transport her personal tee-pee to Silver Spring just for you.
All you have to do is come.

If you're not being around us we recommend the following 3 activities:
-Disco City
-Moneytown
and very late night houring @ this place right here.

+We Fought the Big one turns 5 @ Marx Cafe. Buy Rick a drink.
Oh, and this:

SATURDAY
Well, all the hustle and bustle will be around the Steve Aoki/Gavin/Nadastrom bonstravaganza but I recommend the following: Checking out Here we go Magic early on at Red & The Black and then
finishing up late @ 930 club downstairs with us and those crazy blue drinks and / or attending Hometown Heroes.

Also very important: midnight movies return to E street cinema and tonight it is Jurrassic park time.
No shitty sequels, just the first and the finest.

Libby is so excited she can barely breathe right now.
Man, I love Jeff Goldblum.

SUNDAY
I don't know, maybe rest?
Maybe take a 4 hour nap on your couch and eat some smores and watch movies you've been meaning to see but haven't had time to? Maybe call you Mom, tell her you love her. Eat some soup. Watch "The Soup". Maybe walk to Dupont and buy some fresh food at that green market you always mean to go to and make yourself meals that don't come in boxes this up coming week. Maybe just sit and read. Maybe...maybe don't even listen to me, just do what you want with your Sunday.
It is yours and you totally do deserve it.

Plenty other options available in and on the calendar.
Shameless self promotion can start in comments....right about NOW

Can you guarantee that only people who have seen and love Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid will be at the movie, and not a lot of dbags who just want to be seen at a BYT party?

So amazing. You would not regret it.

Not afraid to shamelessly self-promote...

This Saturday afternoon from 2-4 PM, Transformer Gallery, located at 1404 P Street NW, is screening THUMB WARS. To add to the insanity, Shi-queeta Lee is refereeing simultaneous thumb wrestling matches including the headline match between CRACK drag queens Summer Camp and Heidi Ho at 3:00 PM! Prizes to be awarded to champion thumbs.

Michael- Svetlana's father AND my father ARE BOTH GOING TO BE TEHRE.

3 years ago Svetlana said

1. god I hate ani difranco
2. shea-that sounds AWESOME.
3. Michael, you were at the Blow Up thing, weren't you? It was as anti-dbaggy as any party in the history of time. Plus, as Libby mentioned-the elders are attending.
4.For dinner I recommend this place called The Mandalay which is like 3 blocks away from AFI (look it up) that Chris Burns and his Mother eat lunch at and IS AMAZING. They will also not flinch if you simply order whiskey as dessert. Its Nepalese food.

3 years ago Alan Zilberman said

Svetlana isn't lying about the whiskey for dessert.

3 years ago Michael said

The Blow Up thing was pretty anti-dbaggy, except for Joel of course.

Ok. The last time it rained. Can it not rain this time? Also can there be parking for my big old truck right in front?

Thanks for the "We Fought the Big One" anniversary party plug Svetlana. I hope some BYTers take you up on your recommendation to buy me a drink!

Because it's our big 5 year anniversary party, Marx Cafe is doing Belgian beer Happy Hour from 10pm until 3am: Bottles of Red and Blue Chimay are $5; DeKonick on tap is $5. So if you're heading back into the District from Silver Spring on Friday night, and looking for a nite cap somewhere...

I second Mandalay in Silver Spring (on Bonifant St.). Their soup (KyarZan Hingar) is delicious as are their drunken noodles. Yum.

Jeff Goldblum was best as part of the ensemble cast from the movie The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimmension! Get on that Cale.

Also I'll go so far as to call Ani D. a "Red Leztroid."

do not UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES order a malibu frou-frou at the Mandalay. or anywhere, probably. it will only lead to trouble.

One of these days I am going to write a Guide to good living and dining in Silver Spring.

Jackie's is good. I also recommend Nicaro, Crisfields, This nepalese/indian spot on Wayne Ave., Roger Miller, Thai Derm, and the Pho spot right around the corner from Jackies.

3 years ago alexandra said

peter, you better just be talking about the delicious appetizer at the tune inn.

So many amazing things to get in to! Should you have a tiny bit of energy left (and you really should make the effort) several of my favorite things are colliding in a mellow night of music making on Sunday. Galaxy Hut is always wonderful and they play host to popsmarts and twists and turns of The Caribbean as well as the return of local fave Andy Goldman in his Fulton Lights get-up. Should be warm and fuzzy and challenging and head-scratching - like that college girlfriend you still think about. Be there.

Happy Anniversary Rick!
