Best Weekend Bets

Best Weekend Bets

February 26, 2009 by Svetlana

Rumor has it weather is looking up for the weekend. And with the weather so should you.
Its a good few days ahead so plan your outfits according to this:

THURSDAY
Do something classy/educational/educationally classy to begin with. I suggest:
-the Russian Mardi Gras celebration which happens at their Cultural Center conveniently located just 2 blocks away from Russia House which features gold leaves on ceilings, vodka with no mixers to speak of, Russian art, and an opportunity to do what I can only describe as “euro dance”. You’ll know what I mean when you see it.
-alternatively- there is an awesome Louise Bourgeois lecture @ The Hirshhorn and IT IS JOHNNY CASH’S BIRTHDAY which you can celebrate by seeing Live @ Folsom Prison at AFI followed by whiskey shots instead of dessert at Mandalay, the finest Himalayan food establishment in Silver Spring.

Afterwards, sure Tokyo Police Club is sold out but the Watson Twins/Ben Kweller at 930 club aren’t and neither is The Trail @ RNR Hotel and just up the street at Crab’s Claw PWRFL POWER is playing one if his last pre-return-to-Japan shows.

Man up and end things super late @ Better days
CRAWL HOME.

FRIDAY
Since Thursday was too much fun you may need a break from life but K’Naan is playing Millenium Stage (meaning it will be free AND early) and there are some fun art activities at both Alliance Francaise and Hillyer so while you can call it an early night, you can still squeeze plenty in and be in bed by 10pm.

Also-Howlies @ Velvet Lounge. Peter wants you to see them. And when Peter talks, you better listen.

SATURDAY
I have decided to teach myself how to cook a new meal every week this year.
I think it has to do with a fear of finding myself being grown up and still doing things like microwaving quesadillas at 11pm. So-that’s what I plan to do.

What I probably will end up doing is microwaving some quesadillas and then heading out to Dissident display, then to the Cat to see Benjy Ferree (the new album is AS MIND BOGLINGLY GOOD AS YOU THINK IT WOULD BE) and then if the mood/spirit/level of drunkenness holds up to Nouveau riche.

Also-DC9 is 5 years old. You may want to celebrate.

Also, ALSO-if you are gay, you want to go to this and probably disregard the rest of offerings mentioned beforehand.

SUNDAY
Spend the whole day losing yourself in the wonderful world of Ulillillia.
When you emerge for air, after cursing Justin for introducing you to the wonderful world of Ulilililia, please don’t forget that Plants & Animals, a band we love very dearly are at DC9.

THANK YOU.
Comments-now.

it’s not exactly like mardi gras…Maslenitsa is a little more pagan and badass, complete with setting fire to an effigy and throwing blini at it. which I hope the Russian Cultural Centre has next year because free flowing vodka and fiery effigies can only lead to awesomeness.
