First things first: if you have written to us asking to contribute and we have not written back (or more than once) yet it is not because we hate you (well, at least not all of you), it is because we need a momo to collect our thoughts and impressions. Either Libby or I will be writing shortly.
Now, onto the weekend. If you are not going to Baltimore and decide to stay here this is what is up, in handy, chronological, consequential order.
Thursday
You’ve already danced barefoot in a bar once this work week (oh wait, that was ME) why not do it again?
Brazilian night returns to St.EX (now with special guests) and with it come the usual combo of sweat, tears, getting dizzy from all the twirling and possible consequences of wanting to eat not one but two Manny & Olga’s on those stairs outside of Som Records. Needless to say, we very highly recommend this.
Alternatively, Adrian Loving is spinning up the street at Marvin, Velvet lounge hosts a very loud night of shoegazing and Top Ranking is as solid of a weekly choice and you will get in this city.
Oh yeah, and the Nico Muhly/Doveman/Sam Amidon show got moved from Birchmere to a church in Silver Spring (and the price went down to 10 bucks) so if you are into classical music prodigies and weirdness, in a good way, then this should be all you, all night.

Friday
Or “only Friday” as I like to call it.
Aside form the Ben’s block party anniversary bonanza, Its a dance night’s night, really.
Options include:
-Fatback, now at a new AND air conditioned location of Red Lounge, right on 14th street next to Marvin.
-And the Jukebox Jam (with US Royalty) @ Jimmy Valentine’s. (which is also the unofficious after party for the Ra Ra show at RNR)
3 out of 4 of these don’t start till 10, so plenty of disco nap time.
Use it.

Saturday
If you are not ignoring your breast cancer walk training, you should be busting out 17 miles of walk today.
If you ARE ignoring it (and yes, you do know you are screwed) you can just move into the Cat tonight.
There is a stage switcheroo sitch in which Apes and Oneida are playing the backstage (almost unheard of on a weekend to have a show there) and Bliss is celebrating its anniversaire on the Mainstage. With Wallpaper guesting which, really, should be motivation enough to go. Wallpaper is the best.
Between these two events am not quite sure where anyone else will be, but they will at least pit-stop through here.
Oh and I don’t know what SLANG is, but I like their flyers.
Sunday
Normally I suggest nap time, pool time, see “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”-at-noon time, and hiding-from-the-world-while-hating-Bravo-shows time but two things seem to be better than that:
- the free mojito hora de feliz on the roof top of Beacon hotel (classy AND cheap, its like what BYT reader dreams are made of)
and
-the big 930 club Ben’s 50th anniversary blow out.
You love your half-smokes, so you should go.

NOW TELL ME WHAT I MISSED
michael, what happened to ’select list’? you dirty whore.
August 21, 2008 at 3:37 pmquote.. “between these two events, not quite sure where anyone will be…”?? really? wow. how about at the OTHER awesome show going on with four local bands. Greenland, Mother, Tiger & the Snow, Carlos I’m Pg. i mean i love the apes too but they’ve been playing pretty frequently and i can do bliss anytime. i think you really blew it on this, not mentioning the greenland show too. it IS on your calendar. just sayin…
August 21, 2008 at 3:44 pmYou can’t do Bliss with Pogo anytime Sara.
August 21, 2008 at 3:48 pmand wallpaper is AMAZING.
August 21, 2008 at 3:53 pmthey are going to have Oneida play the backstage? They are ruining the show! Bummer.
August 21, 2008 at 3:55 pmTwo Camp out Festivities:
The Project [Music Festival] Gore, VA
Mustock Music Festival Lignum, VA
this is true.. true true true, point taken. but personally i prefer rock shows to dj dance parties. i love bliss and all but thats just me. my point is that there IS another option that night that is awesome and noteworthy, in my opinion. to put it like “i don’t know where anyone else would be..” was surprising. i love greenland and if you haven’t heard mother, they were amazing at their first show. all four bands are extremely good. the black cat events are definitely awesome too but to say it as if that is the only good thing going on that night just seems a bit ridiculous. that is all. how about, go to bliss then go to rnr and back to bliss? that could very well be my plan for the evening.
damn i sort of miss the days of living in cities that were extremely supportive of their local music scene. it sometimes surprises me for being such a small town. nothing like chicago.. good definitely, just still a culture shock.
supporting the Apes show IS supporting the local music scene, btw.
we love greenland, we have featured/reviewed greenland extensively, and mother rose from the ashes of hard tomorrows which we also have featured/reviewed extensively, and the show is ON THE CALENDAR, it is just that in this particular circumstance we chose to recommend the Apes AND Oneida.
Why am I even defending myself?
My whole existence revolves around supporting the local music scene.
I sadly have nothing to contribute to the Bets this week as I’ll be spending the weekend in Denver telling journalists that they cannot come to the Kanye or Fallout Boy parties and then running away before they stab me with pens or stone me with blackberries. But I do have a question - where’s Cale? I miss him.
August 21, 2008 at 4:12 pmmainly local bands at Mustock (Dust Galaxy)
and mainly mid-Atlantic at The Project (lots Baltimore acts).
So There!
August 21, 2008 at 4:13 pmsara s. you are lame.
August 21, 2008 at 4:27 pmAlso. Milwaukee is way cooler than Chicago.
August 21, 2008 at 4:29 pm“mainly local bands at Mustock (Dust Galaxy)
and mainly mid-Atlantic at The Project (lots Baltimore acts).
So There!”
awesome maybe i’ll do that instead.
fyi, my posts weren’t intending to offend YOU personally Svetlana. I don’t even know who you are other than reading a few things you’ve written here and there. I didn’t even take note of who had written this article.
I apologize if you took my words as a personal attack. I really just meant that this town (not you) is generally LESS supportive of the local music scene compared to the other cities I’ve lived in. I think it has more to do with socio-economics than anything– and certainly has nothing to do with BYT or you personally.
It was just an off the cuff remark, sorry if you found it offensive.
Of course going to the Apes show is great, going to Bliss and supporting DJs is great too. I’m glad you love Greenland and support them with your articles. You should really go see Mother and or Tiger and the Snow sometime too. They are new bands in a town where bands seem to be dropping like flies.
Again, no offense to you, personally, intended. It is clear and obvious to anyone that you personally do good things for this town.
–Sara.
August 21, 2008 at 4:32 pmChicago stomps Milwaukee.
Cheese heads are phony. and lame to boot.
August 21, 2008 at 4:37 pm“Sara S. You are lame”
“Also. Milwaukee is way cooler than Chicago.”
I agree, Milwaukee is cooler.
But this suddenly is a lot like high school.
I didn’t make a personal attack against anyone, or call names so I find it highly innapropriate that a member of your staff did so.
I guess we can agree this town has awesome bands and that Svetlana has obviously done a lot for this town and that Milwaukee is cool. Probably, thats it though.
August 21, 2008 at 4:41 pmi must be very tired and fragile, considering I apparently let: “i think you really blew it on this” get to me.
i mean, people have wished me sterility on this site and used to not even bat a lash at it.
must be getting old and weary.
proceed with the chicago / milwaukee fight (and group hugs) as planned.
also- it is obviously caipirnha time already.
August 21, 2008 at 4:45 pmI attacked Chicago. Hence the follow up.
August 21, 2008 at 4:48 pmLame is as lame does, remember milwaukee and wisconsin when we make your sandwiches more delicious, when you see outlaws bikers making the roads and life seem a little more free, and most of all remember us when some drunk person decides to make out with you (it’s prob the beer).
August 21, 2008 at 4:51 pmMeanwhile, Ra Ra Rasputin is playing at the Hotel on Friday night……………
August 21, 2008 at 4:55 pmyeah i dunno, my thought is — saying you blew it for not mentioning the other show is not the same as wishing you sterility or publicly calling you names– neither of which i would do. i mean, people blow it sometimes. i blew it for not wording my comment more carefully, apparently. i was just very surprised that you didn’t mention the other show, seriously, thats it. nothing personal.
i will proceed to happy hour as well. oh and svetlana, i wish you many years of fertility and beautiful children.

August 21, 2008 at 5:03 pmPeople are nice on the internet? I think Sara S. must have an ultimatum.
August 21, 2008 at 5:14 pmPeople are stupid on the internet? I think Michael meant ulterior motive.
August 21, 2008 at 5:14 pmeddie, that means that not enough people RSVPed (aka, moi, because i have relocated to richmond).
michael, i expect you to visit me when come down to visit your dad.
sara, since you’re new to the area, you will come to know that BYT and all local bands worth knowing are very close, very very close. byt’s support for them goes without saying.
August 21, 2008 at 5:32 pmeddie - it is still a select few, I’m just shite with keeping contact lists.
August 21, 2008 at 5:34 pmSara,
Your initial comments did come off a bit aggressive….
that said, I am glad you are keeping your ears open for local bands, new and established. You seem to be quite on top of it for someone new to town. I’m somewhat new here too (Portland transplant). I think you’ll be surprised how much there is going on musically in DC.
There are a lot of bands that are really great– Mother is a perfect example. I also love Greenland. Both are excellent bands. I would also recommend Fever and Birdlips (though Birdlips are not so local)– I am quite a fan of both. I could make you a whole list of awesome established bands– Bellman Barker, Pash, Len Bias.. just to name a few.
Anyway, you definitely can’t go wrong with any of the BYT picks for Saturday evening.. but of course we hope you’ll stop by our little show too.

FOR THE RECORD:
Thank you BYT, for listing us on your calendar, now or ever. We greatly appreciate it. So, I’d appreciate it if people would stop asking me about this NOW. I thought Svetlana handled this appropriately AND quite gracefully; and that this Sarah person had some extremely misguided enthusiasm.. or too much free time.
I have to get to work now.
Thanks.
Angie
