Best Weekend Bets

Best Weekend Bets

July 2, 2008 by Svetlana Send to a Friend Send to a Friend

So, it is Wednesday morning and I am writing “best weekend bets”. Yes, it feels weird. But since Thursday is the actual Friday this week, and Friday is a holiday, that makes Wednesday this week’s Thursday, and you want your options laid out nice and neat. So, here they are.

Wednesday

Chances are your office is slowly thinning out due to the “american holiday syndrome”: people, starved for more vacation time always tack their vacations onto already exisiting days off and start leaving the city in droves. this results in spending their day off in traffic with the rest of the people who had the same idea, but….they don’t care.

for those staying in the city…sneak out a few minutes early from work (no one will notice, trust me) and check out Beyond Downtempo Happy Hour, for once. Eat the indian nachos. Drink the martini specials. By 9 you’ll be ready to rumble in all sorts of ways.

We loved the Black Angels last time they were in town (or I should say, Peter loved them, and I blindly trust him) so-go to that. Or stay in the NW and check out the Seamonster show at Dahlak (which apparently is the new place to be as I got something like 85 emails with events happening there yesterday) or go to St.EX and hang out with Neal for “Hell’s Angels, Hippie Chicks, Lizard Kings and Rainbows…(beer and cocktails too)”
This is the image he sent with it.
Its inspirational in so many ways I cannot even begin to count them.

Thursday

This is the day you party, because lets face it the rest of the weekend you will be in some sort of a food coma.
Option 1:
Blisspop Feat. Dave Nada, Matt Nordstrom, Gavin Holland, Blaqstarr, Spiggy & Will Eastman @ 930 Klub. It starts at 8 (if you were a night of a 1000 DJs, you’d start at 8 too), costs 15 bones and/or you could just win tickets to it.

Option 2:
Taint.

Option 3:
US Royalty’s “4th of July Approved kick off” at Jimmy Valentine’s. Which is free and will be fun but you may not emerge live or before 5 am.

Friday

Things to remember 4th of July by: meat, meat, and some more meat.
Some helpful tips:
Build up to the party.
Handle the jungle juice carefully.
If you start with hard liquor (or worse: everclear or moonshine brandy) BEFORE 3 pm you WILL be asleep by 9. If you’re lucky. Trust us, we’ve tried this out for you.
Don’t burn yourself with fireworks.
AND EAT.

Which brings us to… if you’re in a “where’s waldo” mood here is a nice little photo medley from last year where you can play a spot the bands, intrepid reporters, Washington Post’s going out guru(s), DJs, Joel’s Mom and then some)

After that, for some reason people decide to go out.
This never ends well.
Ever.
Last year Bellman Barker did this country song cover night at Wonderland and, in my mind, it was perfect, even if I did fall asleep at the bar, but this year you have 2 options:

The higher energy one involves:
Dancing your calories off with Sterefaith, Cassidy, Cale and The Rapture @ Sorted (this time on Cat’s mainstage) - win some free tix plus other stuff here

The more civilized one is:
We fought the Big One @ Marx Cafe. Always good, always classy.

Saturday

Experience tells me that this day tends to be a wash as everyone just crashes but since it is a Saturday and you are young and bright and whatnot, you may decide to power through another night and just sleep all day Sunday.

In which case the Fever / Black & White Jacksons show at DC9 should sound awesome as well as should AutoRock’s Mass Appeal (CD Release Party) @ RNR.

If reading that sentence makes you want to curl up in a fetal position and just cry, you should stay at home and hydrate.

Sunday

Seriously dudes, you’ve been out partying for 4 days straight.
Stay in, watch “The Neverending Story”, relate and then write us an essay saying “Why in the World Did I ever think Atreyu was the Perfect Boy When I was 9?”
Falcor is still the perfect dragon though.

Speaking of The Neverending Story, someone just told me that a theater up in Bethesda is doing it as a play. WTF.

Don’t forget that the Fever/BWJ show also features the return of the much-missed Wild Fictions. Trying to cash in on the early-2008 nostalgia wave, perhaps?

Saw The Neverending Story last weekend in Bethesda… in a theater full of 5 year olds. It was hugely entertaining and fairly cheap. Puppets were involved.

Seriously. Saturday is fucking the DENALI reunion show in Richmond. There is no better plan. Go to Richmond drink pbr’s at the price that made them famous and see one of the best bands of the early 2000 era.

Try Dengue Fever at the Black Cat Sunday night. Since when have you needed to understand lyrics? Besides, I’m not just saying this because the Express featured them heavily. I’m saying it because I saw their March show.

Svetlana Says:

We did too. Read Peter’s Dengue report right here:

I totally phased out on them even being in town.
