Best Weekend Bets

Best Weekend Bets

June 26, 2008 by Svetlana Send to a Friend Send to a Friend

Ok so-first things first: Today is my Mom’s birthday. Happy Birthday Mom! This is her (she always says Fitsum takes photos from too close up because they turn out brutal for someone her age, but I think its a pretty rad photo) at the BYT relaunch party:

To celebrate that and more my parents are spending her birthday at the beach in Montenegro, probably eating fresh mussels some little urchin plucked from a reef this morning, drinking moonshine and white wine spritzers and sitting on a terrace overlooking this:

so, lets face it, your weekend is not going to be as awesome as that but YOU CAN TRY.
so, here is a handy day by day guide to what is up (plus of course, check out the Baltimore re-up, the free movies post and the folklife festival preview for additional info on fun.

off we go-leave comments for more

Thursday

Ease into the weekend. There is a bunch of happy hours rolling around AS well as Fort Reno but seriously-make sure you eat dinner. Blueberries found at the bottom of your champagne cocktail don’t count.

Then-Modernist society returns to Bourbon with Dana Millbank (aka “the funniest man at The Post”) as the guest, and I am, as always, excited for that unique combo of music, talk, and feeling good about myself while drinking because I am (sort of) participating in something cultural.

Apes are also playing tonight. With Butthole Surfers. At 930 club. BRING EARPLUGS.

Friday

Palace of Wonders is 2 years old. There is a multiple day celebration involving the good, the bad and the burlesque so make sure you check some of it out at some point. And I recommend doing it today because Saturday has more shit going on that a public restroom at a truck stop (what am I saying? I don’t know)

Alternatively, there is a bunch of cool art parties (art itinerary coming tomorrow) and BYT always supports Velodrome at Selam (this time with KOKO who Ed and Scott promise will “at least 20% quieter and just as awesome as Screen Vinyl Image last month. Before and after Koko plays, lies the real meat of Velodrome, Ed Dudes and Scott Bauer getting deep. Come get down to the best in italo/hi-nrg/post-punk/nowave/house/whatever other early 80s jams they have to offer. Maybe there will even be live drum programming/mixing during their set, who knows. WBMX, what?!”

And if you do want to see SVI-they are playing with Urlich Schnauss and Auburn Lull at Velvet Lounge.

No matter what you do you may want to consider getting a redbull IV before

Saturday

as this goddamn night is out to get you.

Lets run through the options:

-Noveau Riche (with Miami Horror and Gameboy/Gamegirl) moves to (not FIVE, which is temporarily closed) but 1223 ACROSS THE STREET. REMEMBER THAT!!!!
-Datarock / Autorock and Sneakers in the Club kids are at RNR Hotel
-Thievery corporation / Ladytron / Seu Jorge and TV on the Radio are playing Merriweather
-Mission of Burma is at the Cat Mainstage
-Bobby Fisher memorial building is hosting its last exhibit and show before they close it
-Bliss is at The Cat Backstage
and
-we are hosting a Bliss/Ladytron afterparty at Redeem. With free booze. And stuff. YOU SHOULD RSVP. Remember how much fun that was last time?

So, that should pretty much kill you.
In fact, just one of these events should pretty much kill you but the combination of any of them will most certainly do the job.

Sunday

You died.
Remember?

Listen to some Esperanza Spalding (because she is a genius), take naps, watch some good and so bad they’re good movies and check out the new Sunday night weekly at Science Club if you have the energy.

Added bonus

Win tickets to things this weekend because free fun is better than fun you have to pay for:
+Mission of Burma
+ Ladytron/Datarock/Taxlo @ Sonar
+ Modest Mouse
+ Nouveau Riche

And remember:

They don’t love you like we love you.

And yes, now chime in.
