Best Weekend Bets

Best Weekend Bets

June 12, 2008 by Svetlana Send to a Friend Send to a Friend

Oye, as the heat is getting a little less oppressive, it is time to moisturize your almost tan limbs, put some defrizzer in your hair (the humidity is NOT going anywhere) and make the most of what this city has to offer.

Thursday

Jamie Lidell is playing 930 club but he rejected my interview request (though he did this), so I have decided to hold a little bit of a grudge and not go. Plenty of others will though, I’m sure.

In the classy corner over here we have the Nordic Jazz (with Wildbrids and Peacedrums) night on the rooftop of the Swedish Embassy. The jig is 25 bucks but the feelings of superiority are priceless. Vinyl district did a nice little preview, so we don’t have to.

In the CLASSIER corner over here, we have SHORTS IIII at Asylum. The jig is free as always, and the weather is 100% shorts approved (for once) and the feelings of shame the next morning are priceless. Cue the Spin Doctors:

Two Princes - Spin Doctors

Friday

+More Jazz, both free and not free.
-Some awesome Friday the 13th themed movie fun.
-a great local bill @ RNR
-The Callum Robbins benefit is at the Cat.

++++Plus, THE ATTACK OF THE DANCE PARTIES.
For serious people, how are we gonna choose?
Though, if I was to place bets (which is what we are doing here, after all) I’d vote for this or this or this. Expect Fitsum and Dakota to somehow teleport and take your photo at all of them.
Wear a gold lame bikini and your photo WILL BE TAKEN.
Buzz Lightyear and Kiddie Pool optional.

Saturday

I promise the Art Itinerary is coming tomorrow, but in the meantime, rest all day, shave like you mean it, show your gay pride (and shame), apply some clinical strength deodorant (”she-dewy. you-not dewy”) and head out into the wilderness:

The best show of the night is gloriously DIY and features BYT favorites Bellman Barker AND Prabir & The Substitutes and is at The Party Pit.
Which is in Tenleytown.
If you don’t want to go to Tenleytown (I understand), Transatlantic at DC9 seems like a kicker as does this week’s Warehouse loft party

Sunday

I never want to leave my house on a Sunday, ever.
But the stars have aligned in such a fashion that something like 85 good shows are happening: Shearwater and Cryptacize take the Cat, a pop delight of a night headed by Tullycraft takes the H street and Thalia Zidek and Major stars (+Kohoutek) are at Velvet. and Jose Gonzalez is at 930 Club.

You’ll sleep tomorrow.
Or when you’re dead.

Now, I obviously missed things so pimp them and yourselves away..

On the Spin Doctors, way back in 1994 or something, maybe 1993, we drove to Wilmington, DE for a party and they were playing a show there.

Hippie stunk so bad you could smell him off stage and 3 deep.

well that might explain why I saw no mention of the Lidell show here…

too bad since he is hands down the finest performer of our generation… anyone who skipped on tonight’s show only cheated themselves… I was glad that while he had a full live band with him tonight he still put out some of the one man band aspect that made the first time I saw him a few years back so mind blowing…

Sunday marks another solid show {at RnR hotel} -> much buzzed about Sub Pop band Grand Archives with Mojave3esque darlings The Fairline Parkway celebrating their CD release as the opener.
