In what is turning into a sad, sad 08 tradition, another Thursday, another Best Weekend Bets, another “Svetlana is already too tired to think”.
This week alone I’ve seen 5 bands, been to 2 after parties, put out several fires, fended off a cold, worked 30+ hour on my actual job and eaten zero dinners. Because there was no time.
But because I love you, and want you to have fun, here is where you should go and what you should do this week.
And if you know better than me, then well, you know better than me, so comment away.

Thursday
Great night ahead.
Two bound to be great shows: The always amazing Sharon Jones is at the Cat (with Ivan Milev band and DJ D-Mac) but the jig is sadly sold out. However, just up the street Neville Chamberlain brings back his Brazilian Night to St. Ex which is ALWAYS fun and up on H street Rosebuds and Carol Bui hold court at RNR hotel
Its a win-win-win situation.
Friday
Lots of art, so tune in for the all important “Art itinerary” tomorrow.
On a slightly less cerebral level:
Guerrilla Queer Bar crawl takes over Marvin tonight. And after that:
2 dance nights: Sarah and Kim of Powwow debut their Kicks dance night at the Cat. Great ladies, great music, lotsa sass and if anything is going to try and fill the evil disco void (at least in spirit), then this is it.
Also … Fatback moves from Local 16 to Dahlak so expect it to be dirtier. Which means better.
2 shows of note, both at smaller venues: The band once known (and loved) as Bonapartes return as The Cobra Collective to IOTA and our new favorite Norwegian metal pop stars Ungdomskulen play The Red and The Black. Do your homework for the show here and then thank me later.
Saturday
Counter culture festival kicks off (read our all important Schaeffer the Dark Lord interview tomorrow, and weep).
great night over at Garutachi and a terrific local lineup (These United States, Roofwalkers and more) for a good cause at Laboratory.
plus, two of my favorite men in DC (and that is saying something as there are sosososooo many of you, I am spoiled for choice.) throw their (hopefully soon to be traditional) Capricorn Bash at Dissident Display. Always classy.
Sunday
Apparently people have MLK Day off, so they’re looking to party.
I don’t ever have MLK Day off, but I am ALWAYS looking to party (apparently)
The choices are: the old faithful that is Taint at DC9 and a RockCandy dance party spectacular at RNR Hotel.
Plus, you know, anything else you’d rather do. Like sleep.
i feel you Svet
nightlife addiction, it’s what’s for dinner
thanks for the picture of Tanya and i in the inset
back when professional pictures were allowed at the Black Cat, those were the days
if the weather doesn’t get in my way
i’ll be flying to Dublin tonight for the weekend
to see Alison Moyet at the oldest theater they’ve got on Sunday, first time in the UK’s got me excited
and for good measure
Tanya’s headed out of town to NJ then NY
enjoy the long weekend
and head for the hills
I would add Friday’s Liberation Dance Party at DC9 with open rail from 9 to 10:30 and then Sunday’s Prince vs. The World party on the Black Cat mainstage.
And Michael, you have room for one or two more balls? Once you freeze them off, I suppose you mean.
January 17, 2008 at 3:37 pmthe UK has lots of things to get excited about, especially Scotland!
Dublin isn’t one of them
it’s in Ireland
(UK = United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland)
micks rule. eat it, scottish boy.
January 17, 2008 at 4:11 pmthank you for the clarification
i was just going off what i’ve been told
better to always be educated
thanks again
dublin for the weekend? you’re so mom and dad circa 992 when dad was a diplomat and making wayyyyy too much money for what he did, which was basically host parties.
January 17, 2008 at 4:26 pmFree Jameson 11:30-12:30 and free Tezon tequila 12:30-1:30 tomorrow night at Napoleon, 1847 Columbia Rd. Why? Because it’s the freakin weekend baby I’m about to have me some fun.
January 17, 2008 at 4:43 pmi wish daddy was a diplomat, then he wouldn’t have to work as hard as he does, plastic surgeons work till they die or until arthritis, God forbid, he has a great pair of hands that do amazing work
mom and dad split 7 years after i was born, so no mom and dad for me together in 1992 i’m afraid
but dad does host some mean parties
and yeah, i have a thing for tangents, deal
Will rulz for quoting R. Kelly
favorite quotation: “we got jookin’ all night”
’cause some of us know what jook joints were/are about
Plastic surgeon? I could use a new rack – can I get a discount?
January 17, 2008 at 5:26 pmsure thing
anyone referred through me usually gets a discount

I’m going on a tangent to a scooter rally in Durham (Freeze Your Balls Off, or FYBO). Got room for one or two more…
