"She'd Get Out More, If it Wasn't A Felony"
So goes the tagline for my favorite movie that only I saw: "Cherish". (if you, in fact have seen it and love it too, lets be serious friends, or more).
There are so many great things about it: post-Craft Robin Tunney, Liz Phair and Jason Priestly borderline cameos, that dude from "O Brother, where art thou", a killer radio hits soundtrack, and a plotline involving not being able to leave your ikea couch because you're under house arrest because of a crime you did not commit but you cannot prove yourself innocent because you cannot leave your couch. There is also rollerskating, stalkers that can dance really well to Soft Cell and maybe I'm imagining this but a Latin dwarf? (I'm not imagining it, and HE HAS A JERRY CURL) Anyway, you should rent it. And I'm dedicating this DC weekend to it.
But, before we start, a couple of words from our sponsor:
- Please read our Free Movies guide, there's a lot of cool stuff in it (incl. this awesome Thelonious Monk documentary tonight)
- Please read our Art Itinerary, it is good for you, and subscribe to our "Year in Art" newsletter, it is also good for you
Now, that we got that out of the way, we can focus on the music and the booze that awaits around every corner this weekend. Get your game face on:
THURSDAY
Of Montreal is sold out, so consider other options:
- Midnight Kids (containing most of the member of Apes) are at Velvet Lounge
- The aforementioned Thelonious Monk documentary is going to be great and free
- everyone's #1 DC United crush Ben Olsen has an art opening.
Do some amazing dancing, preferably with now slightly pudgy 90210 stars:
FRIDAY
Since Thursday wasn't too ragerific, you may actually consider coming out and about tonight. At latest count there are 17 events listed in our calendar, so you cannot say that there are no options. We recommend:
- The Upright Citizens Brigade shows at Harman Hall
- The weird but promising pairing of Exit Clov and True Womanhood @ Strathmore, with both bands showcasing new material. (win tickets here)
- That New Wave dance party @ Dahlak
- Homo/Sonic @ The Cat
- or the lets face it, hilarious sounding Cobra vs. Mongoose jam at Velvet
Still, 13 more events are on the calendar for tonight, so make sure you make informed bad decisions.
Why do you like music so much? Escape.
SATURDAY
Help support Girls Rock, then go to a bazillion art events around town and then-dance party central:
- Amanda Blank is at RNR Hotel
- though if somehow that could be merged with Nouveau Riche @ DC9, we'd have every neon jumpsuit wearing person's dream (median party attending age: 21)
- (Quality) Britpop (nostalgia) rules the night at Razzmatazz @ The Cat (median party attending age: 33)
- + you know, all the other stuff
Spend some time dancing to the songs off the Cherish Soundtrack , all of which prove that most of love songs out there are really creepy and are amazing for preparing to stalk someone and stalk them like you mean it:
SUNDAY
There doesn't appear to be much going on, calendar wise, so use this opportunity to;
- Get super OCD with your Netflix queue
- Buy your Cruisin' tickets (remember, they're available only on presale, so...)
- Catch up on our hilarious yet touching Sundance Festival coverage
- develop a crush on Andrew Wodzianski
- develop a crush on your already exisiting crush
- take lots of naps
- not see "Moon" unless you're looking to take more naps
- and other stuff (like iron your hair and gracefully rollerskate)
NOW TELL ME WHAT I MISSED MENTIONING, the comments await.
God loves a cheerful giver.
Lots of people saw "Cherish" - it was in the rotation on one of the cable channels for awhile. I, and I would guess every straight guy that saw it, fell in love with Robin Tunney.
goddamn cable
I actually caught Cherish at the theater, and then picked it up on DVD. Very cute movie, and yeah... kind of hard not to love Tunney in it.
Also, I'm gonna have to argue that Moon comment. Fantastic film, Rockwell did an amazing job in that one.
I've totally seen this movie, Svetlana. And you totally owe me an email!
Yup, I'm in love with Tunney. If I could just give her my last name, she would be perfect. Give her my last name, and maybe a little blonder.
