Best Weekend Bets

Best Weekend Bets

January 7, 2010 by Svetlana

Happy Serbian Christmas (to me). Since all the Christmas decorations have been long replaced by Valentine’s day decorations (really?) and my parents jumped the ship to spend the holiday with their other child and his very expensive cars and because no one outranks me on this block (though some of you are definitely better guitar players than me) I am forcing you all to celebrate today if through nothing else then through this post. Useful information is included too, I promise.

First up, lets take a shot of the Sljivovica, Serbian plum brandy, to get things going right.
Packaging may vary, but the result is the same: that feeling when it seems you may die but then, miraculously, you are ok.

Then, read our handy Free movies in DC this week guide for additional ideas and lets move bravely on.

THURSDAY
Phillips after 5 has it’s first 2010 event today and if you are yet to see the Man Ray Exhibit and not too worried about staking out tables at Rhodeside for the Alabama Texas game you’ll go.
Also-Capstan Shafts are at the Black Cat (David Malitz’s Cheniers open) and City and Colour is at 930 club.

But what you really want to do is find yourself a place with a good brass orchestra and dance in a circle while you try to get a coin out of a honey cake (which tastes just like bakalava but simply means more business). For good luck.

FRIDAY
Sure you’re tired already but only one work day left. For some reason, this Friday did not get the memo about no one ever wanting to go out on Fridays so here are some options:
Washington Sculptor’s annual show is at the Edison Place Gallery, and looks interesting
KICKS celebrates it’s 2 year anniversary at the Black Cat while Upper Crust and DXS destroy the main stage
Maximillian Dunbar, always a super quality choice, is at Napoleon and the gays will be at RAW.
Not good enough?
“Youth in Revolt” opens tonight too but I hear Michael Cera is a smug little nerd (I still love him) so…you know.
More Kusturica for everyone else:

SATURDAY
I sure as heck hope weather warms up but with my luck, it will probably drop to -72 degrees. Anyway-keep warm, and consider the following options:
Early in the day double feature it up with Breathless and Last Year in Marienbad.
At night:
Cory Obendorfer and friends hold the Art fort at The Fridge
there is a (promisingly? disasterously?) entitled event called “DRINK+DRAW” at the Gallery Neptune
SEAS does Second Saturday @ The Cat (check out our listening party with Ben here)
RJD2 is at 930 club (win some tickets here)
and Grandmaster Flash (really) is at IBIZA.
A little something for everyone, plus a million dance parties on top of them.

Mix it up:

SUNDAY
Go see some movies: Avatar is actually not horrible, NINE actually is, and “Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus” is supposedly opening this weekend.

For those with extreme masochistic tendencies in this weather, the NO PANTS METRO RIDE happens again and after you’ve recovered from the brink of hypothermia, it may be a good thing to know what Joe Rogan is in town.

Also-a random Harajuku celebration

Slow down:

A million different options are also available in the very comprehensive event calendar, but feel free to use the comments to tell me about the stuff I missed:

Underground is the best Serbian magical realism EVER. Required viewing.

Michael Says:

I was going to write up this thing about how everyone should go see The Upper Crust because they’re amazing, but then realized my words would probably be wasted. See? You haven’t heard of the Upper Crust because you’re not awesome enough to. They rarely play, they don’t really grant interviews, and they aren’t going to do anything but sneer anyway.

Sneer and rock your fucking kidneys inside out.

So don’t go, attend some DJ thing instead. Then kick the dookie out of yourself come Monday when everyone’s talking about how fucking amazing it was and I submit my weekend in MSPaint.

And DxS is playing, too, so there’s that.

P.S. Rolling Stone says The Darkness and Les Savy Fav have ripped them off so there’s that, too (RS still sucks though).
