Happy Wednesday before Thanksgiving everyone. My parents are somewhere in the depths of South America, not returning to DC till Saturday, and have YET to even ask me what my holiday plans are for this weekend. So, they may as well find out at the same time as everyone else on the internet.
Also-color me predictable, but we're going to do this one with a little "Home for the Holidays" (my personal favorite Thanksgiving movie ever) sprinkled in.
Ok, so lets dive in:
WEDNESDAY:
Wednesday before the big day is always a BIG going out night. It is like the notion of having to spend 24 hours with your family may kill you so you may as well show up hungover and broken and have no one but yourself to blame for your misery.
ANYHOO-if so inclined-it is a good night to rage, whatever your rage level is.
First and (not so ragingly) foremost- Devendra is in town. I mean, he is UNMISSABLE.
Secondly-Midnight Kids and Free Energy are also playing shows.
Thirdly-for those determined to dance till all your Thursday calories are pre-spent the following choices exist:
-Chris Burns et al take over Station 9
-The Gay Universe converges into a sweaty pile of awesome at WTF Thanksgiving
-and Bee's Knees does their special Gobble edition at Velvet
Arrive in style:
THURSDAY:
Food comas etc.
In the past years I've noticed that people want to congregate but seem to be generally unable to move. Having said that-Zero 7 is at 930 club, and Ian Svenonius plays records you wish your parents were cool enough to own at Velvet.
FRIDAY:
You have today off (unless you work in the worst place in the world) so do anything BUT shop. Catch up on your netflix, go see "The Fantastic Mr. Fox" or "The Road", go to a Midnight screening of "The Room", walk to a museum, do some crafts, build a leftover turkey castle....
At night: Mountain goats are in town. + a plethora of dance nights of all ilks which can be found in our handy calendar on the homepage.
SATURDAY:
You've already had a weekend AND THE WEEKEND IS ONLY STARTING NOW.
They Might Be Giants put on one of the most awesome live shows ever.
Also-Will Eastman releases "Feelin'" his first record at this month's Bliss
Sol Power is at Dahlak
Nouveau Riche is at DC9
Modest proposal is sold out.
and Tommy Wiseau's spirit is still with DC.
That just about covers most of it.
SUNDAY:
I am tired of this weekend just by typing about it. Take long naps, eat pies that have no pumpkins in them, check out Peter Jackson's movies before he was Peter Jackson, rearrange your closet, work on your holiday cards, send thank you notes to everyone who fed you this weekend, that kind of stuff.
NOW TELL ME WHAT I MISSED
T.H.A.N.K.Y.O.U
God loves a cheerful giver.
Yeah, I have to work a half day on Friday. So I still have to wake up like normal, go into work, just to leave at 1pm.
FML.
Ebert wrote in his review of Home for the Holidays, "Have we not all, on our ways to family gatherings, parked the car a block away, taken several deep breaths, rubbed our eyes and massaged our temples, and driven on, gritting our teeth? That is not because we do not love our families, but because we know them so very, very well."
I think about this every time I head to my parent's house. It's like a cleansing mental tonic.

Have wretched weekend with family ahead, but planning to swing back into action on Monday with Solas Nua's Declan O'Rourke concert which includes an OPEN BAR. Turkey coma be gone!
Or Friday night you can come to Rock and Roll Hotel to see:
- Loose Lips –
“The foursome channel bits and pieces of the greatest parts of pop music over the past four decades…their synth melodies don’t sound dark and introspective but upbeat and breezy as if injected with a dose of 1960s California pop, with a side of working class grit. But Loose Lips doesn’t sound so much like they’re retreading their influences as reimagining them. When those familiar guitar riffs are found in such a well-crafted song, like the five on the new Weighing Winter EP, the familiar sounds fresh again. Furthermore, based on their onstage chemistry, you’d think the quartet had been playing together for at least five years.” – DCist
