A couple of weeks a go, in a time of particular and nagging emotional need I did what any sane woman would do: I went to Target on an off hour. Some people may comfort eat (or heavily drink) but, in my world, a place where you can get tights and mac&cheese AND the first season of "Ally McBeal" on sale within 16 minutes or less is the place to answer all your problems. Anyway, the weekend following was filled with NOTHING but xxtreme "Ally McBeal" watching both in team sport format and as a solo discipline (please note the estrogen dripping off your screen in this photo):

and while yes, the show is as neurotic as you remember it being when you were a teenager, and the women ARE painfully skinny and the skirts are short beyond any point and Billy, really, IS A WIMP, the land of unisex bathrooms, "taking a moment", face bras and Fishisms is definitely a land worth visiting.
And so, that is what we're going to do in today's "Best weekend bets" while I mentally prep myself for diving into season 2.
Before we start though-make sure to check out Marcus' electronic music update for all the dance (party) news you can or can't handle.
Ready? Do you hear the bells?
THURSDAY
Granted, you did get pretty ridiculously drunk on French wine last night at our Beaujolais party but there is absolutely no reason not to drink in a different cultural setting tonight: Brazilian Night is on, US Royalty is continuing their cross-over effort by doing a one-off at Darlington House, and there is more beaujolais and gay Paris @ Napoleon.
Also some great to good shows:
JESUS LIZARD!!!!!!! New Rock Church of Fire!!!!! Casper Bangs & Stellastarr!!! and for the sensitive indie rock lover in you-Bishop Allen gets terminally cute at the Cat (every time they whip out "Butterfly nets", a part of my stone cold heart melts, against all better judgement).
Solid choices. If you're lucky maybe you'll even make a good friend without other options.
FRIDAY
The wine and cheese madness just won't and can't stop. Then-do the right thing and check out Matthew Hemerlein play 85 instruments during his CD release at SOVA . For electronic music fans, the fact that Tim Hecker is in Baltimore should be enough to pack up and GOOOOOO. (WIN TICKETS HERE)
Also-everyone should see Wrens live
Also-TWILIGHT opens but no one sane is seeing it opening night.I imagine getting tickets would look something like this:
SATURDAY
Catch a matine of Twilight. Take friends and mild hallucinogenics with you. Then- have important discussions about vampires vs. warevolves, make decisions to be both more dramatic and needy (something you can learn from both "Ally McBeal" AND teen bloodsucking dramas) take lots of naps and get ready to get sweaty: Fatback is tonight, as is Mixtape as is Party Lights. No reason not to dance (with imaginary babies or not) ever.
Also-An all local band star benefit for Martha's table happens in Takoma
SUNDAY
Be tired. Play or watch football. Eat food you make with your friends. See the Terra Cotta Warriors at Nat Geo. Or suggest stuff in comments.
God loves a cheerful giver.
I like wrens.
i recommend people check out Party Lights at the black cat backstage on saturday. and not just because i'm tending bar. but because it's gonna be a whole bunch of awesome 60's girl groups and soul.
This weekend is booooooooooooooooring.
I recommend people go on bicycles somewhere, dressed elegantly.
