“I remember a place... a town... a house like a lot of houses... a yard like a lot of other yards... on a street like a lot of other streets. And the thing is, after all these years, I sill look back... with wonder.”
So, sure it is just another weekend in the town you know (and hopefully love) but there is no reason not to approach it with the mumbling yet burgeoning sense of self that Kevin Arnold maintained so well while riding bikes around and pining for Winnie Cooper.
It is fall, the city is at it's most prettiest (double superlatives always intentional) and the byt calendar is so full it may burst. Welcome to the very special Wonder Years Best Weekend Bets
Before we start please make sure to check out the Art itinerary and Marcus' Dance Music Update since those two in and of themselves carry more activities in it than this post ever could.
NOW:
THURSDAY:
The fact that Isabel Toledo is just a couple of blocks away should be enough to make me die of joy but tickets are 45 dollars and chances of qt slim to none-so, the decision is all yours.
Also-Kurt Vile is in town for people who like pretty songs that are more complex than they seem (Benjy Ferree opens, making it a solid gold investment) and MODESELEKTOR is in town for all those into glitchy songs that are more complex than they seem.
Partytime afterwards with: All Killer, No Filler @ LIV
FRIDAY:
It pains me to say this but it is a really good Friday to go out:
Shows wise:
THAO and The Get Down Stay down are at the Cat (the new album is great). Dragonnette helps Liberation celebrate it's 5th anniversary.And-local bands gather for a one-off charity show @ Eastern Market
Dance party wise:
RAW happens at Green Lantern. Moneytown is always a great choice. US Department of Bhangra is at Bossa.
Sit and listen to Slumberland records wise:
SATURDAY:
The big show in town tonight is Peter Bjorn and John @ 930 club who are always a delight live (make sure to try and win a meet and greet with them, and make sure to show up early for El Perro Del Mar's first DC show)
The other big show in town is Le Loup's sophomore CD release good time at The Black Cat. (big feature is coming tomorrow)
Small but promising shows include: Bullfight academy @ 3rd street co-op (for all you DIY die hards out there) and Protect-U @ Comet
And for something completely different: Found Footage Festival happens
SUNDAY
During daytime: Celebrate the anniversary of the Berlin wall going down @ The Newseum and/or check out Gentlmen Jesse (last seen opening for Black Lips at the Cat) do his thing at an early show @ Quarry House.
Unexpected bonus: Amy Millan from The Stars is at DC9. Marty Royle opens.
And then, before you know it, we're back at the beggining
Plenty of other options exist in the calendar but comments are there for all the self-promotion you can handle.
