It is the first day of October. It is colder, badder and weirder outside than its been in months. That is, if you want it to be. Its that in-between time when you're still tan but are slowly starting to swathe yourself in tights and scarves and think impure thoughts about roasted chestnuts and Irish coffees, instead of ice creams and margaritas. All I feel like doing is staying in, watching "Donnie Darko", having good bad dreams and making myself things with very melted cheese as a primary component.
But the BYT calendar is chock-full and even if you run from it, just like that imaginary evil bunny, it will eventually catch up with you and you will have to give in.
So, lets go on this ride.
Before we start please make sure you check out our all important free movie guide and Marcus' dance bonanza update to get the most rounded of all ideas for the weekend.
Then:
THURSDAY
Go and feel cultured RIGHT AFTER WORK @ Phillips after 5. ALSO-NICK HORNBY IS IN TOWN.
then, with Ra Ra Riot/Princeton show being sold out in its entirety to people who still cannot drink legally, your DVR set to record all of NBC's programming in its entirety, make sure you pick wisely:
-WAVVES @ RNR Hotel
or
-AMAZING BABY @ D9
Making choices blows. I have made mine, but I can't help you with that one, this is your battle to win with yourself.
Bonus: a total rager happens @Liv tonight
And remember:
28 days... 6 hours... 42 minutes... 12 seconds. That... is when the world... will end.
FRIDAY
Fridays are so goddamn hard.
I have not wanted to go out on a Friday in a year.
Having said that - there are 4 very classy opportunities to hang out with classy people:
-Blubrain is playing @ The Writer's Center for their Story/Stereo Series
-Moneytown brings in the big guns (DJs from Fatback, Brazilian Rhythms etc) @ Dahlak
-Future Times and Chris Burns meet at Selam
and
-We Fought The Big One teams up with The Vinyl District for the nerdiest (read: most knowledgeable) listening party you'll go to this week.
PICK UP LINE OF THE DAY:
Gretchen: You're weird.
Donnie: Sorry.
Gretchen: No, that was a compliment.
SATURDAY
Crafty Bastards represents my own personal 5th circle of hell: a lot of people, a lot of very small things that are not necessarily functional, a lot of people...still-DC loves it, and loves it hard and kudos to the City Paper for throwing it, yet again, this Saturday.
So-spend the day(time) getting all your unneeded needs at the Marie Reed center.
Hopefully it doesn't rain like last year.
THEN: DURKL store opens, Middle Distance Runner and Casper Bangs play, Autorock DJs and I will personally be going to The Warehouse where SPICE, the party, actually represents my own personal version of heaven: sweet and spicy cocktails, Sean Peoples, dancing, hopes of romancing, all sorts of warm and fuzzy feelings....
GUILT YOUR FRIENDS INTO GOING BY SAYING:
Sometimes, I doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion!
SUNDAY
DC Record Fair happens at COMET AND YOU REALLY WANT TO GO.
TRUST ME.
Also: Mayer Hawthorne's Lonely Hearts tour hits DC, and Wlada, our European intern, SWEARS that in Europe this is all the rage, so if you're into Sunday raging-go.
I personally recommend getting into "Bored to death" because despite the painfully hipstery set-up, the Scwartzman/Galifianakis/Danson combo is all win all the time.
Oh, and buy some Bentzen Ball tickets at some point, the festival starts in 3 weeks!
AND IN THE END:
Frank: Don't worry. You got away with it.
NOW YOU TELL ME WHAT I MISSED
Because you know you want to (p.s. plenty of other options readily available in the calendar)
God loves a cheerful giver.
also-disco biscuits
Tonight from 6-8pm at the Washington Animal Rescue League (WARL) they are having (FREE) cocktails and cupcakes to celebrate the opening of the new kitty city! What's not to love??
Also, you can play with some adoptable kitties and WARL is waiving adoption fees for anyone that might want to add a soft cuddly cat to their life.
Bored to Death is so great, I don't care if I'm in its target demographic.
If you head to H Street for Autorock, MIXTAPE will be happening on the main floor of the Hotel.
I, too, will be attending SPICE on Saturday. Someone buy me a cocktail!
DC's own Fender Splendor (who's been in the Air Guitar Championships coverage on here several times) is also hosting the DC All-City Air Guitar Championship at Wonderland tonight.
North of Canada, Johnny Headband (featuring members of Electric six) and Brad Radish will be rocking the Velvet at 9pm tonight. This is Headband's first show ever in DC, and they put on a show that is literally the best live show out there right now. Screw Ra Ra Riot or whatever other bullshit is going on and come to this!!!
