Best Cosmic Weekend Bets

Best Cosmic Weekend Bets

June 25, 2009 by Svetlana

For small creatures such as we the vastness is bearable only through love.

So this week, as we prep for for a slightly more cosmic weekend than most we will look to combine our love for both Carl Sagan and “Space Camp” into a guide worthy of your free time. Check your oxygen tanks, don’t look down and most importantly, don’t try to guess where the quotes are coming from.

My philosophy is: sleep late, drive fast, and not take any of this shit seriously.

THURSDAY
The weather is, much like all week, looking good. Perfect to pack a picnic and head to the 2nd Fort Reno this year. If you see our intern Andrew there with a camera and notepad, being productive, play nice. Stay late behind, enjoy your lemonade and look at the stars. Alternatively, Ferriss Bueller is taking his day off under the DC night sky too.

Tons of fun stuff to do afterwards (almost disturbingly so):
-Lemonade/Telepathe/Lode Runner are at RNR Hotel
-the always superfuntime that is Bee’s knees is at Velvet Lounge (with Pansy Division upstairs)
-Napoleon has a special latin summer dance series that kicks off today
-The Electric cabaret is a big one this week
and
-Wheat and XYZ affair are @ DC9

It’s just that it’s easier to say you don’t care, than it is to try and fail.

FRIDAY
We all know how I feel about going out on Fridays.
Having said that the Japanese cultural center is showing “Sky Crawlers” for free, which is an anime movie just born to be seen this weekend.

Afterwards: the Affair at the Hotel looks fun as always, that Michael Jackson tribute band @ 930 club LOOKS AMAZING and this is the last week of Natalie Portman’s shaved head residency @ DC9 so maybe make the most of it?

Or you know, just go on an adventure:

Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known.

SATURDAY

Oh, I mean this is like the greatest thing since the X-Wing fighter!

This basically sums up how we feel about the prospect of summer camp this weekend.
Sure there are themes, but then, there is SPACE CAMP. Its the one we’ve all been waiting for. (possibly all our lives) We have a moon bounce (!), we have astronaut ice cream (!!), we have 4 of DC’s most fun DJs (!!!), we have a millenium falcon inflatable (!!!!), we have …we have….OMG, SO MUCH STUFF, you just have to make it over. K??
Unlike last week too, the weather looks to be ah-may-zing.

After this 2 safe, good times prognosis 90% options:
-Nouveau Riche and Bliss

and 2 special, not-every-month, wow-i-can’t-believe-i-almost-missed-this options:
-CRACK
and
-a combo of ENON @ Comet and NEW YORK NIGHT TRAIN HAPPENING @ Civilian Art Projects which promises to make you feel like you’re not in DC for at least one night. For most of you, this is a selling point, I know.

Imagination will often carry us to worlds that never were. But without it we go nowhere.

SUNDAY
rest.
relax.
go check out some art studios @ Gold leaf.
go on a rooftop you know where to RSVP to for.
Stuff like that.
Also-Tiny Vipers are @ The Red & The Black. You probably did not know that.

PLENTY OF OTHER OPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE IN THE CALENDAR and in our weekly COUCH SESSIONS aggregated post, but if i missed them (it happens) you have the comments to go all wild and crazy in with your own suggestions.
k?
