VOLUME 1 - JANUARY 12, 2012 (UPDATED!)

Click the above link to sample the goods and hear this week's playlist of the killer shows on sale this week.  Get those tickets while you can!!

  • UPDATED: APRIL 25TH: RODRIGO Y GABRIELA @ Warner Theatre (On sale this morning!) -- Mexican musical duo who specialize in playing fast, rhythmic acoustic guitars.  Check out their cover of "Ooogie Boogie's Song" from the Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack -- amazing!

  • JANUARY 19TH - MAVIS STAPLES @ The Hamilton (On sale now!) -- While this show is technically sold out, you can still put your name on the guestlist to be one of the first(!!!) to experience the live side of The Hamilton.  Talk about earning some (old school) buzz dollars.

  • FEBRUARY 12TH: DUM DUM GIRLS w/WIDOWSPEAK @ Black Cat (On sale Friday, Jan. 13th) -- I think we're all suckers for cute girls in leather jackets (and killer tights) who can manage to pull off great hooks. AmIRight?

  • FEBRUARY 14TH: SLOW CLUB w/ AIR WAVES @ DC9 (On sale now!) -- Originally hailed as "the next White Stripes" Slow Club are Charles Watson and Rebecca Taylor from Sheffield, United Kingdom. They sing using quirky lyrics, a variety of percussion instruments and great vocal interplay.

  • FEBRUARY 16TH: SLEIGH BELLS @ 930 Club (On sale today @ 10am) -- Love 'em or hate 'em, Sleigh Bells drop their second album, Reign of Terror, on February 21st, meaning you'll get an exclusive first-listen at all new jams complete with an epileptic light show.

  • FEBRUARY 22ND: ISLANDS @ Black Cat (On sale Friday, Jan. 13th) -- The Unicorns may only have been around for the length of one album, but that didn't stop them. Like Voltron, the various members kept re-forming into different but equally powerful units. One of those incarnations was Islands. Joined by friends, including one or two of the kids from Arcade Fire, Unicorns ex-pats Nick Diamonds and J'aime Tambeur came up with yet another take on Canadian indie rock. Weird and melodic at the same time, the latest release - A Sleep & A Forgetting - demonstrates what can happen when forces come together.

  • FEBRUARY 25TH: JAVELIN @ Red Palace (Tickets on sale now!) -- Mixing sounds that range from broken dance jams to relaxed chillwave, instrumental cut-ups resulting in an almost mix tape fantasy is what Javelin does best. Of course, the duo has received a great deal of early praise from all the right people, including; Pitchfork, Brooklyn Vegan, and early champions KEXP.

  • MARCH 6TH: EXPERIENCE HENDRIX TRIBUTE TOUR @ Strathmore (On sale Friday, Jan. 13th @ 10am) -- featuring Billy Cox (The Band of Gypsys & Jimi Hendrix Experience) ‧ Buddy Guy ‧ Jonny Lang ‧ Kenny Wayne Shepherd ‧ Dweezil Zappa ‧ Brad Whitford (Aerosmith) ‧ Chris Layton (Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble) ‧ Mato Nanji (Indigenous).

  • MARCH 24TH: YOUTH LAGOON @ Rock and Roll Hotel (Tickets on sale now!) -- Although his music seems somewhat dreamy with the first listen, the lyrics show a different side to the matter. Hidden beneath the melodies is a voice that is eerie yet nostalgic.

  • MARCH 26TH: THE JOY FORMIDABLE w/ A PLACE TO BURY STRANGERS @ 930 Club (On sale today @ 10am) -- The Joy Formidable began building a buzz in 2008, making appearances at several British festivals and earning high marks from publications like The Guardian, which recommended the band’s "darkly joyous soft-loud racket."

  • MARCH 27TH: METRONOMY @ Rock and Roll Hotel (Tickets on sale now!) -- If first album, Nights Out was possessed by the feel of the 4am chemical-inspired journey to the next party, Metronomy's new album, The English Riviera is floating over calm waters on a balmy summer’s day, with Mount swapping on-edge, nocturnal fuzziness for the warm studio feel of classic 1970s artists, such as Fleetwood Mac, Steely Dan and Stevie Wonder.

  • MARCH 31ST: THE DELTA SPIRIT @ 930 Club (On sale Friday, Jan. 13th @ 10am) -- Pitching its style between the indie rock and alt-country camps, the group issued an EP entitled I Think I've Found It in 2006 and hit the road alongside Cold War Kids and Dr. Dog. Back in June 2010, they released their second LP, History From Below.

  • APRIL 6TH: SNOW PATROL @ 930 Club (On sale Friday, Jan. 13th @ 10am) -- You know that song about Chasing Cars that literally took over the air (and TV -- I'm looking at you, Grey's Anataomy) waves? That was Snow Patrol.  And yes, they have better songs than that one.

  • APRIL 13TH: HOWLER @ Red Palace (On sale now!) -- Rough Trade approved indie boys with 60’s American rock and pop songs, as well as 80’s punk as their influences? Yes please.

  • MAY 1ST: HANNI EL KHATIB @ DC9 (On sale Friday, January 13th @ 12pm) -- Khatib is a multi-instrumental genius who serves as singer, songwriter & producer for his one-man band (live he is joined by a drummer) that is part blues, part garage rock, part soul, part folk & part doo whop.

  • MAY 21ST: DAMIEN JURADO @ Black Cat (On sale Friday, Jan. 13th) -- Jurado is a singer-songwriter in the indie-rock tradition of Seattle, Washington. His music is regarded as being heavily influenced by folk. Nick Drake had a definite impact on much of his work, but Jurado has modeled his career on more idiosyncratic and unpredictable music figures like Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Lou Reed and Randy Newman, who followed their muse no matter where it took them.

@@DCAreashows: we're purposefully choosing not to focus on sold out shows (like Jeff Magnum) and this column is intended to spotlight things that are GOING ON SALE THIS WEEK. obviously, there is a ton more out there that have been on sale for a while etc....

I can't wait to for Cults (1/14) at the Black Cat, Coeur de Pirate (1/25) at the 9:30, and the Arctic Monkeys opening for The Black Keys (3/9) at the Verizon.

I'm a bit bummed that I couldn't get tickets to see Justice, but at least I'll see them up in NYC.
