It is no secret that we LOVE drinking @ Bourbon Steak. Their holiday cocktails were some of our favorite in the city, and if you saw our Winter Food Guide you know that Jamie MacBain was in charge of our punch for this edition.
So, that may explain why when we heard that post-holidays, the REAL winter cocktail menu is going live, we ran over and submitted our livers to taste testing what Jamie and Duane had in store. And we were not disappointed.
The menu's been around for a week or so now and, according to the bar staff, the Cranberry Cobbler is a favorite - which sort of makes sense since the combination of vodka, sherry, cranberry-sage syrup, macerated cranberries and fresh citrus is pretty universally crowd pleasing.
Still, for the adventurous imbiber, it is almost a shame to order that and look over some of the more esoteric and creative combinations on offer.
My personal favorite was the SKAAL, a spicy Akvavit-based concoction made with lime juice, celery juice and spicy cane syrup, with a half rim of sugar (this half rim business btw-is pure genius and probably the way of the cocktail future) while Shauna fell fast in love with Glaser's ghost, a super smooth and perfectly balanced marriage of Compass Box Spice Tree and Orangerie whiskies and aperol (dirty rumor has it that this one is the least ordered one, which is a shame, so we're launching a campaign to remedy that and usurp Cranberry Cobbler's position).
Other highlights include: a OAS caffeinated take on the pisco sour and hey, a sort of a beet margarita (once again, with a half salted rim and called "We've got the Beet" which beat out "Beat it" in the naming game) which further confirms that beets are not just having a moment but are here to stay.
But I mean, for real, someone order Glaser's Ghost. I mean, just look at it, it practically glows from within:
side note: the Tokyo hash with quail eggs is NOT on the drink menu, but IS on the bar food menu and is heaven. Do with that information what you will:
