Bright and early Saturday morning, I attended the DC Goodwill Fashionista's World Swap Day Clothing Swap out on Glebe Rd in Arlington. It was cold and nasty outside, but the hardcore swappers didn't let the weather keep them away.
In addition to the swapping action (with fortifying snacks provided by Red Bull and Pretzel Chips), a raffle was held in which all proceeds were donated to Goodwill of Greater Washington's job training and support programs. The prizes ranged from Goodwill gift certificates to an entire Rock Band set. While this was not the first swap Goodwill of Greater Washington has done in partnership with Swap.com, Marketing and Communications manager Shanna Gidwani said she hoped that, by holding the swap at a Goodwill location, that swappers might become a bit more aware of the programs Goodwill runs right here in the DC area.
Swappers were pleasantly polite and friendly; there was no snatching or elbowing anyone out of the way to reach the goods. There were a ton of gems up for grabs, like cute chambray dresses, big comfy grandfather sweaters and a pair of sky-high black cage heels, but I saw women happily sharing the bounty, giving advice on hemlines and ways to accessorize. Lisa Rowan, the DC Goodwill Fashionista blogger said, "You never know what you're going to find at a clothing swap, but I've never walked out empty-handed. Even if you bring home less than you offered to swap, we say it all works out in the wash—and your closet is probably grateful."
I scored a killer black-and-gold lace 80s evening dress, as well as a wife beater printed with primary color dumptrucks (sweet, right?). I was also tipped off that the DC Fashionista blog is going to be unveiling something pretty awesome in February...so stay tuned! Check out some of the swap booty:
