Brightest Young Things

Country music has embraced many traditions over the years – and Christmas is certainly one of them. Whether you’re cheerfully welcoming Santa or your next shot of whiskey, there’s a song for you.

Come hear these and more at OUTLAWS tonight at Marx Café.

  • Loretta Lynn – Country Christmas - No playlist would be complete without a song from the Coal Miner’s Daughter. This is a great original holiday tune from 1966.
  • Hank Thompson – I’d Like To Have An Elephant for Christmas- An oddball track with some killer pedal steel from Thompson’s 1964 album It’s Christmas Time With Hank Thompson. FYI, the character Bad Blake in the book and movie Crazy Heart was inspired by Hank Thompson.
  • Bill Monroe –  Christmas Time’s A-Coming- The man almost single-handedly created a whole genre of music – Bluegrass. That alone makes him required listening. This is from 1951.
  • Hank Snow – The Christmas Cannonball-Despite what you might think, Canadians play country music and celebrate Christmas. This is from Snow’s 1961 album Christmas with Hank Snow. If you have a copy, consider yourself lucky.
  • John Denver – Please Daddy (Don’t Get Drunk This Christmas) - Maybe the best song Denver has ever recorded. By no means jolly, this is a track for when you have a tear in your eggnog.
  • Buck Owens – Santa Looked A Lot Like Daddy- Probably one of the more well-known country Christmas tracks, this is a classic from 1965’s Christmas with Buck.

Hope to see y’all tonight at OUTLAWS
