Brightest Young Things

All Words and Photos: Rachel Eisley

In a bizarre yet delightful and apocalyptic take on a 1950’s gumshoe mystery fueled by dueling journalists hot on the trail for the next big scoop, the Landless Theater staging of Devil Boys from Beyond graces DCAC with hilariously campy gender bending entertainment until February 26th.  Lucretia Blozia, notable DC drag performer and playwright extraordinaire, blows the show out of the water as Lucinda Marsh - the most femme and high maintenance headline junkie you’ll ever meet.  The play centers around Lucinda using her incredible sex appeal to stymie her male counterparts and aggravate her biggest competition: the impressively glamorous and elegant Matilda Van Buren, excellently played by Patrick Murphy Doneghy.  Equally determined to be the first one on the scene, Matilda is irritated to no end by Lucinda’s antics and the tension between the two provides a hilarious series of actions and reactions, as each reporter tries to get to the bottom of the mysterious alien invasion plaguing Lizard Lick, Florida.  Peppered with well-timed jokes on the news industry and punctuated with thinly veiled nudges towards the state of LGBT rights in the US, Devil Boys from Beyond uproariously captures the excitement and stress behind journalistic intrigue while providing non-stop nonsensical laughs throughout the whole show. A must see!
