When djs Shea Van Horn and Matt Bailer began their monthly party Mixtape in the Fall of 2008, they did it out of necessity. “I can’t be the only person who wants to dance to a little Italo-disco or acid house or early Wax Trax! recordings. But, I’m not hearing that anywhere,” Van Horn told Brightest Young Things that October. The promoter noted that parties catering to the alternative (hipster) gay crowd "fill up just two nights per month, at best,” “That leaves 28 other nights when the alt-gay crowd is stuck with Madonna-rama.”
What Bailer and Van Horn started at Dahlak (the Eritrean restaurant at 18th & U, NW), quickly ignited a cultural revolution. Within months, the duo outgrew the restaurant and were in search of a new home. The inability to find a place that could hold Mixtape's growing crowd led the two to try venue after venue as the party outgrew each space. Eventually that rotation would feature as one of the party's themes, as Mixtape continues to rotate each month between larger venues.
Even more than its own success, the development of Mixtape sparked the innovation among other collaborators in DC nightlife. Where only two alternative parties existed for DC's gay community a year ago, the monthly nightlife schedule is now packed with alternative gigs like Maison, Pink Sock, She.Rex, Shift, Raw and WTF?!.
For the first time since Mixtape's inception, Van Horn took time off from the DJ booth on Saturday night to celebrate his 40th birthday with his party guests (who almost universally shockingly responded to the youthful looking Van Horn's age with exclamations like "But, isn't he 25?"). Joining Bailer in dj'ing Mixtape at the Rock & Roll Hotel was Van Horn's collaborator on the Raw party, DJ Bil Todd.
Floor-to-ceiling photos of Van Horn were posted by friends prior to a special variety show held just before the doors opened for Mixtape. In a testament to Van Horn, more than 40 individuals from different aspects of the his life entertained the crowd with sketches and songs that spoofed Van Horn in a cabaret titled SHEAme (shame). Wigs, glitter and loops of candy syrup could still be found strung around the venue as a packed house of patrons raised their glasses and shook their asses in celebration of Van Horn and his accomplishments.
