It didn't take long for me to say, "This is so much better than last year!" about this year's Fashion Fights Poverty "Raw" theme. "Raw" - a theme about nurturing untapped creative energy, artisanship and asserting creativity over trends - was well-suited for the new Artisphere space. 2009's Fashion Fights Poverty show at the Mayflower Hotel was grand and well-organized. This year's event in the new Artisphere was more relaxed, fun and edgier - a good change for an event that's looking to appeal to a wider audience. Gorgeous designs from local designer Chez Kevito and Pakistani designer Nomi Ansari were shown in addition to Crooked Monkey's current line of t-shirts. Toka Salon in Georgetown donated time for hair and make-up and produced creative, beautiful looks. Gerry Coates, co-owner of HRYDesign, was presented with the first-ever Avant-Garde Inspiration Award for his continued inspiration, vision and support for FFP. The official part of the show closed out with Matisse performing "Better than Her" and a couple of other songs with two back-up dancers.
