Saturday night brought a flurry of DIY fashion and art aficionados to three empty storefronts at 1629 L St. NE. The spaces are each specifically named and feature three different installations.
- The Study is designed by the Birds of a Pleather collective’s Emma Fisher and Merin Guthrie (formerly with Worn Magazine) who filled the raw space with abject-looking mannequins hanging from the rafters amidst thrift-store found outfits similarly hanging from the ceiling. Fisher and Guthrie floated through the space rather regally in handcrafted outfits of their own, Fisher in a long white train and Guthrie in a hot-pink floor length puffed skirt. Both greeted guests who entered and explained their exhibit which they intend to jumpstart discussion about fashion in the nation's capitol.
- The second space, called The Pantry, is the official pop-up shop of #DCRESIDENCE, starring local DIY retailers selling swag ranging from hoodies and bags by DECOY, to baked goods from Crunkcakes. Goods were reasonably priced and authentically creative and sales support the artists who made them, which is a golden trifecta when purchasing gifts of any sort, in my opinion.
- Finally, The Icebox by The Fridge features a special exhibition called Leftovers curated by Alex Goldstein, gallery director for The Fridge. Patrons could wander in and out of all three spaces through front or back doors, which lent the exhibits a community feel. All three spaces were excellent experiments in pop up gallery and shop events, with The Study especially aesthetically pleasing and stimulating.
