A PYT was fumbling around in her purse for a light, the Virginia Slim between her lips nothing but pure potential at this point. We sat six feet apart, leaning on the pine. I fished one of the cardboard matchbooks from a bowl.
"Hey."
She raised her eyes, just in time to watch me bend back a match and flick it against the strikestrip with one hand. I placed the matchbook on the bar, the lit match crooked but upright, and slid it towards her with my right hand. The book came to rest in front of her, and she had merely to lower her head to bring the Slim to smoldering life.
The evening progressed from there.
