Brightest Young Things

words and photos by Jane Briggs

Scottish band, Mogwai, of Matador Records rocked out at the 9:30 Club on Monday night.  This is the only band that I have ever purchased ear plugs for in advance; very good move.  The audience stood in a motionless trance, absorbing the distorted guitar effects that the band is known for.  Playing songs, like "I'm Jim Morrison, I'm Dead" and "Killing All the Flies," the band reminded us why they have been relevant for over a decade now and still going strong.  For their encore performance, the band treated us with "My Father, My King," leaving the stage and letting their instruments reverb for what seemed like an hour.  The weaklings, and those who did not buy ear plugs in advance, ran for the doors gripping their ears in pain.  It was a great way to end a stellar performance.

post-rock shows are generally amazing.

where else (besides viewing a Lisa Frank sticker booklet) do you get to use the words 'ethereal' and 'synesthesia' to describe your night?

awesome pics... thoroughly enjoyed the show, picked up Young Team and Hawk is Howling afterwards and abused my eardrums some more. That last song was punishing, I definitely fell into the weakling group the last 2 minutes.
