Brightest Young Things

New York City born, Russian raised Elizaveta is about to take the world by storm with her major label debut, Beatrix Runs which came out yesterday!  From Bach to Bjork and everything in-between, Elizaveta's world is created upon a fusion of opera, electronic beats, piano hooks and a pop melody. An ambitious endeavor it may seem, at which this multi-instrumentalist chanteuse and composer definitely succeeds, as she mixes up her very own heady brew of genres, echoing sensibilities not unlike those belonging to Queen's own (and former opera singer) Freddie Mercury.

Just in time for her show at Jammin' Java this Friday, we got the songbird to give us a closer look at a couple of her gorgeous songs.  Have a listen and a read below!

Meant

Meant is a song that is actually quite contradictory in nature. It is a story of heartbreak and denial, but the verses, which speak of the loss and the anger, are the opposite of the choruses, where the heart is still hopeful, in a sense. When I recorded it in the studio with Greg Wells, I was coming down with a cold, and my throat was in shreds after singing it a number of times, in order to get the perfect take - also because it is so emotional, and my voice kept giving out.

Armies of your heart

This is one of my favorite songs on the album because of it's imagery and rhythm. It is also a rather poignant song, but it sounds happy - I love being able to combine hidden meaning with an upbeat tune. There is a line in it from a William Blake poem. This is a song about learning to find balance between freedom and attachment, but also about the excitement and danger of falling in love.

Goodbye Song

Last song on the record, and the most stripped down one. This is the final stage in the process of losing someone - an end of a relationship. Where Meant represents anger, denial and stubborn hope, the Goodbye Song is about acceptance and letting go, with understanding that you may still love them, yet it is over and there is nothing you can do, except walk away gracefully.

Previously in listening party:

God loves a cheerful giver.
