Brightest Young Things

Los Angeles, 1999. Officer Dave Brown (two-time Academy Award(R) nominee Woody Harrelson) is a Vietnam vet and a Rampart Precinct cop, dedicated to doing "the people's dirty work" and asserting his own code of justice, often blurring the lines between right and wrong to maintain his action-hero state of mind. When he gets caught on tape beating a suspect, he finds himself in a personal and emotional downward spiral as the consequences of his past sins and his refusal to change his ways in light of a department-wide corruption scandal seal his fate. Brown internalizes his fear, anguish and paranoia as his world, complete with two ex-wives who are sisters, two daughters, an aging mentor dispensing bad advice, investigators galore, and a series of seemingly random women, starts making less and less sense. In the end, what is left is a human being stripped of all his pretense, machismo, chauvinism, arrogance, sexism, homophobia, racism, aggression, misanthropy; but is it enough to redeem him as a man?

Sounds intense, right?  Well Rampart doesn't hit theaters until February 10th, but we've got 20 passes to a preview screening next Wednesday (Feb 1st) at a theater downtown.  Since Rampart boasts quite the powerhouse cast, all you've got to do is comment below with your favorite ensemble movie.  We'll pick ten winners (so you can bring a friend/date/Ryan Gosling)  by Tuesday morning. Use a real email adress when you comment.

The Big Chill's ensemble cast was so good that Kevin Costner's scene ended up on the cutting room floor.

The Ice Pirates. Robert Urich, Mary Crosby, Anjelica Huston, Ron Perlman, Bruce Vilanch, John Carradine and football great John Matuszak.

Given that this movie was co-written by the master of modern noir, James Ellroy, I'll go with LA Confidential. Kevin Spacey, Russell Crowe, Guy Pearce, Danny DeVito, and Kim Basinger? Yes please. Phenomenal movie.

"Doubt" with Phillip Seymour-Hoffman, Meryl Streep and Viola Davis. Now that is a powerhouse cast.

"A Mighty Wind". The same ensemble did several films, but I found this to be the funniest.

I'm not sure if it's my favorite ensemble cast movie, nor the best, but the one that pops into my head immediately is "Horrible Bosses" from this past summer.

One of my dad's favorite WWII films, A Bridge Too Far. I remember pulling the VHS tape (double box) off the shelf and Sean Connery was one of the last names highlighted. WWII is a natural fit for ensemble films - The Thin Red Line and The Great Escape come to mind - but there are a few things that separate A Bridge Too Far:

Quite a few of the cast and crew actually served in WWII. Almost all of the actors who were too young had family who served in the war.

It proves the Caine-Hackman theory from PCU.

The Thin Red Line.

This is the biggest ensemble of all time. The cast was so big that some of the stars didn't even appear in the final cut. George Clooney is in there for a mere five minutes. Which is kind of distracting and odd. But the movie is still really beautiful and great despite the 79869807 random famous people.
