Ok, queers, this weekend it's time to cut those conservative bonds of society loose and parade around in your leather. It's Mid Atlantic Leather weekend which means you will be able to find lots of kinksters out there. And everyone is throwing a party of some sort, which you know will be inundated by sexy leather women and men. Grab on to those chaps, it's time to Treat Yo Self to some FINE LEATHER GOODS.
All Weekend
- MAL: Make sure you check out all the events. I can tell you from last year, the leather competition was a sight to behold. And while you're at it, go ahead and pick up some stuff at the market. They have everything for you to explore any kinks you might be interested in. Oh, yeah, and keep an eye out for those live demonstrations.
Thursday
- Join the BYGays tonight as BYT and the Kennedy Center host a Drag Happy Hour for La Cage Aux Folles at Lost Society.
- Hit up Maison for chic French music and that glorious Champagne bar.
Friday
- That new film with Dolly Parton & Queen Latifah, Joyful Noise opens today. Gay icon mega mashup!
- Also, watch Meryl Streep win an Oscar in the premier of Iron Lady at E Street. The showing pretty much ensures that E Street will be one of the gayest places in the city this weekend.
- Your fave ladies wearing lots of plaid and gettin' drunk at Flannel Friday at Phase 1.
- Probably the tamer of the two MAL Code parties happens tonight. It's at the Green Lantern, so, you know, tame means very little.
Saturday
- What don't you go ahead and take the morning to relax a little before gearing back up with the Bluebrain Final Boombox Walk at the Botanic Gardens. Basically it's like a roving hoard of people playing parts of music on tape, CD, or digitally through the different biomes. You gotta RSVP in advance so they can send you the music. This is a must for the weekend!
- Take the afternoon to cruise the MAL market at the Hyatt Regency on Capitol Hill. Basically, $10 gets you in to the vendor area. EVERYONE goes...not just leather enthusiasts. It is the prime place this weekend to cruise cute guys and lesbians (while many of the guys who go to the market aren't into leather, the lesbians who attend usually are very much into leather...just an fyi). Plus, you'll see many of your friends and Capitol Hill power brokers in dog collars and assless chaps. They even have a poppers sommolier who will let you sample. But a warning: do not try whatever is labled "Tahitian Pearl". A couple of us sniffed it last year and we spent the next ten minutes gripping the carpet of the market while the room spun around us. Okay, maybe you do want to try it.
- Sooooooo maybe Code is a little too much, but you still want to party with sexy bears/wolves/otters/ferrets/capybaras. Blowoff will be the best place to pick up all those sexy manimals.
- You want sleaze, classic hot leather men, and exciting hidden secrets in dark corners? Then the MAL XXX Code party is the only place you'll need to be.
- Awesome queer girl show at Phase 1 featuring Allison Weiss, Mitten, & Mal Blum.
- I'm going to go a head and say the following is some kind of kink from the 90's that you can find at Peach Pit.
- Bonus Tip: Return to the Hyatt Regency Capitol Hill after the bars. The lobby will be filled with men cruising each other. The hallways upstairs will be filled with guys walking up and down them looking for parties. You'll get laid. It's a DC tradition.
Sunday
- The Pocket Gays are adding luxury to your weekend with Treat Yo Self Sunday School
- EPIC DJ THROWDOWN sponsored by HRC and LURe.
- Where the Girls Go are throwing an after party for the EPIC DJ THROWDOWN, which means, THROWDOWN PART DEUX.
- Here are some parties we love: Honey Soundsystem in San Francisco. Fag Bash in Provincetown (Bradley once woke up covered in glitter afterwards). Wrecked in NYC. And our very own homegrown RAW right here. They all share an amazing alternative-queer-disco-darkness aesthetic, and THEY ARE ALL COMBINING INTO SOMETHING TRULY MAGICAL tonight at U Street Music Hall. That's DJ PeePlay from SF, Mark Loque from Ptown, Ryan Smith from NYC, and Bil Todd from that place in our hears where the music plays. They're calling it LUTHER and seriously just fucking be there.
- This is it. The final party closing MAL. Recommendation: wear all that kinky shit you bought over the weekend and wait for the droves of men/women to come to you. At $40, it is a bit pricey, but it sells out.
- WTF?! Presents: Zombie Beach Party at Town. $5. Want some counter-programming to leather weekend? Then this is it (actually, the party is so fun that many MAL attendees will say "screw it" to the final leather party and hit this instead). Feel free to wear your bathing suits. This is one of our favorite parties, but it only happens a few times a year. One of the BYGays may be appearing as Zombie Madonna, just saying. It's only $5 and chances are you don't have to work the next day.
Monday
- It is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and chances are that you have it off of work. Sure, you could brunch but this is a day of service. Why not do some good for this city? You can join the DC Center as they walk with the MLK Day Parade. They will be organizing an LGBT contingent. Executive Director David Mariner was recently named our Editor's Choice for "Best Activist" in our Ponies Choice awards. Things like this are why.
