Brightest Young Things

Where we talk about stuff (happening in and around D.C.) we didn't write about but is still something you may care to get all riled about and comment on. So, without further ado - today, in other D.C. media sources:

  • First off, WHOA. Cheaper gas and delicious ready-made mac and cheese? Could Wawa be coming to D.C.??? (via HuffPost DC)
  • Construction ahead: this nine-story building at 14th and U will house 267 luxury apartments, a garage, and 42,000 square feet of retail space (still no word on that Trader Joe's). Here's what it'll look like soon... (via Prince of Petworth)
  • Scum Fact of the day: D.C. is the best city for cheating, or so says cheater website AshleyMadison.com. (via Washington Post) Serious question: has anyone ever joined Ashley Madison and found their own spouse on there? Awkward.
  • Looks like the mythical Dulles Metro line might have hit another construction snag in light of a recent bill passed by the Virginia General Assembly. The bill outlaws state funding of projects that give preference to union labor. As you can guess, the Dulles line falls under this category. As you can also guess, people are angry. (via Washington City Paper)
  • But when that line does eventually get built, it'll need station names which is why Metro wants you to suggest names for the stations along the proposed Silver Line. (via TBD)
  • In non-metro news, have you ever wondered how extreme D.C. parking tickets actually are? Some startling figures--an average of 2.9 tickets PER MINUTE--and the most-ticketed areas, via Washingtonian.
  • Recipe score of the day: Chef Ari Gejdenson of Aqua al 2 shares his recipe for some (believe me) fantastic beef ragu. (via We Love DC)
  • And finally, our President singing "Sweet Home Chicago" with B.B. King and Mick Jagger at the White House blues party. (via Wonkette)

I really doubt Wawa will come to urban DC. They have abandoned a number of their urban Philadelphia stores in recent years, and they have a much stronger following in Philly than they do in DC. Not only that, they already gave up their College Park location a few years back, which was by far the closest to the city. In both cases, this is because current company strategy is focused almost exclusively on large stores with Wawa-branded gas pumps attached built on land that the company owns outright, like the new-ish one in Beltsville. I've heard that they aren't especially interested in leasing stores anymore, and that is obviously an impediment to establishing any new urban locations.
