Around the corner from M St., down the uneven brick sidewalk, in a small barber shop Monday night, The DC Public Library Foundation’s DC Literati Society held a book signing for Walker Lamond’s first book “Rules for my Unborn Son”. The shop was crowded with the young couples and parents of Georgetown; close family and friends of both Walker Lamond and the DC Literati. The tight-knit group enjoyed good conversation, good beer, music by Vandaveer and a plethora of adorable children. The atmosphere tied in perfectly with the quirky, light-hearted yet sentimental theme of the book.

While Vandaveer sang childrens' songs to a smitten young girl, Walker (formerly a celebrated documentary filmmaker) related to me exactly how this book came about. While Walker’s wife was pregnant with their first child, he pondered over all the things he would like his future son to know. Starting out with just a blog, he described it as "one man’s instructions for raising a thoughtful, adventurous, honest, hardworking, self-reliant, well-dressed, well-read, well-mannered young gentleman.” And that it is! After some expert advice to compile said blog into a nifty, handy instructional book, Walker created a collection of sound facts and compelling rules to life.

“Be careful what you put in writing. You can’t take it back"

“Memorize the Bill of Rights and your favorite poem.”

“Don’t underestimate your fertility.”

“Remember, the girl you’re with is somebody’s sister. And he’s perfectly capable of kicking your ass.”

Ranging from the heart-felt to the humorous to quotes from the immortal genius of men in history, Walker’s book is the perfect gift for Father’s day, expecting parents, or a growing young man. With all book sales going towards the DC Public Library Foundation’s DC Literati Society and an exceptional assortment of free beers, Walker’s first book signing was an overall success and a good time. If he so chooses to continue on to a second book, I will be waiting with bated breath.
