Brightest Young Things

What's good my BYT people?

I'm still recovering from the straight up awesome that is My Crew Be Unruly, Sneaker Pimps, and Little Dragon. Saturday saw me sleeping through the whole afternoon, waking up at 6:30 PM and rolling out to do it all over again.

Good times.

The most beautiful thing about this past weekend? There were three distinct events that popped off in the DC/B-More area, with three distinct cultures and crowds, and there was love at every single one. The diversity of events in this area is top notch, and yes, people in other cities should be jealous. (I'm looking at you ATL!)

This Week On The Couch

  • To say that My Crew Be Unruly wasn't the premiere event of the summer would be sacriledge. Like my homie Marcus says, it's like Woodstock for the electronic music industry in DC and Baltimore. Every single DJ in the room brought their A-Game, and The District was well represented by The Nouveau Riche DJs, Nadastrom, and the late addition of DJ Tittsworth, making this a truly regional event.

The Clipse

  • The Clipse were EVERYWHERE this weekend. Not only were the brothers Malice and Pusha T at My Crew Be Unruly, but they also rolled through Commonwealth on Saturday before their Sneaker Pimps performance. Check out these downright amazing photos from Lady Glock and the video from their Saturday night performance (from VIP!)

  • When I rolled into the Little Dragon concert on Sunday, I wasn't expecting screaming akin to a Jonas Brothers concert, but alas that's what went down at Liv. The beautiful lead singer,  Yukimi Nagano became everybody's future wifey (men AND women) after she lead her band of offbeat Swedes through a killer performance. Forget EVERYTHING you've seen our read about DC crowds. This was the livest crowd I've seen in DC this year. The group is coming BACK to DC in the Fall, so if you missed out, don't sleep on them again.
  • When Mitt Romney and Sarah Palin win the presidential election in 2012, I'm getting the eff out of the country and moving to Montreal. Yes, I know it's cliche to want to move to Canada and all, but with friends like my homie Paul of Paul's Boutique, I think I'll be okay. Much to my surprise, he's a huge fan of the site. Check out the interview where he reveals Susan Sarandon's record store fetish and how he built is collection from 100 records to almost 20,000 in seven years. If you're a vinyl junkie then it's definitely worth a look.

  • Even though The Roots have a steady gig playing with Jimmy Fallon, their STILL grinding it out in the Studio. Their new track, How I Got Over, puts any "retirement" rumors to rest. They change up their style, going more Motown for this track instead of the grimier sounds of their last LP.
  • Juvenile fetishes are all the rage in hip-hop right now, with Drake's boobalicous video for "Best I Ever Had," to Young Money's goal to f&$k every girl in the world, and now Kid Cudi's oral fantasies on the track "Poke Her Face." Feminism be dammed, this might be the best video and track of the year.

This Weekend

DC is slowly cementing itself in the art scene, and there are several events this Saturday that will take this extension even further.

  • First up is the Graffiti Rhapsody event that's taking place this Saturday afternoon at Liv. The event features live art and body painting, as well as a live open mic for MCs and Musicians. The event starts in the afternoon at 5PM and goes well into the night, highlighted by an art auction at 1o PM.

  • Also, Saturday marks the 3rd annual Heavy Hitterz art event at Art Whino in the new National Harbor complex (173 Waterfront Street, National Harbor MD) featuring a select group of artists from the urban art arena. Art Whino's events are some of the best curated in the city (if not the best), so it's well worth the drive out to Maryland.

  • Saturday night, the dudes from H Street's Dissident Display gallery are throwing a Masquerade party and you're invited. The keyword here is purple, and in honor of the Pint sized Purple One (aka Prince) himself, there will be many colored capes and platform heels at Napeleon in Adams Morgan.

  • Just like a real three ringer, the monthly Circus event at Expo (1928 9th Street NW) brings together art, bands and DJs. This week The Fif, The Five One, Violet Says 5 take the stage along with live artists Chris Barz, Jenelle Figgins, and Oneperson for another dope night. The event looks like it's going to be at capacity so get there early.

And of course, don't forget Blisspop at Black Cat and Nouveau Riche at DC9, but I take it that you know this already!

God loves a cheerful giver.

that kid cudi song is pretty gross even for me, and i HATE women. none of them is clever nor gangster enough to really pull it off, imo. Lady Gags-a is much more baller. Good beat tho.

The poker face song is one of my top 10 summer tracks. Probably the only laid-back G track I've heard in the past year that actually worked. It's like they channeled De La is Dead for 2009.

Feeling it! I didn't even know there was a video...
