My obsession with The Furries 6th studio album, Phantom Power from 2003, runs deep. I think partly because it came at the end of an era where albums were still digested as such. It also helped that it was a conscious effort from the band to make a stylistically cohesive album, and that it was simultaneously released as a surround sound DVD album. It's an enthralling psychedelic journey, with it's Surf's Up and Byrds homages, gorgeous electronic flourishes, quirky Welsh humor, and relentlessly brilliant songwriting.
Without a dull moment on the record, it's hard to pick a fav, but almost a decade later The Piccolo Snare continues to surprise me. Especially dusting off the old DTS surround sound mix, reclining on the lay-z-boy, closing my eyes, and listening to the three part suite swirl around the room. As the mp3 age of accessibility and quantity over quality sounded the death of the new high fidelity audio format war, SFA sadly gave up on their DVD experiments, but thank God they got this one in the bag before then.
