Brightest Young Things

I had been on a Pavement kick lately and then it was announced they'd be on the Virgin Fest bill.  Yay!  Opening for Jimmy Eat World. Boo! So let's do a Pavement song.

Since they're notoriously sloppy live, we'll pluck from a sloppy album, Wowee Zowee.  After modest commercial success with 1994's sophomore effort Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain, Pavement were both pressured to put out another record quickly and smoking a lot of pot.  The result was loved by the diehard Pavement fans, who were well accustomed to lowest of Pavement's fis, but didn't do much to help their commercial crossover appeal.  Perfect example is Rattled by the Rush, the first single from the album, which starts out as one of the catchiest things Malkmus ever wrote, adds a driving classic rock riff, and then degenerates into a glorious cacophony of jagged noodling guitar wankery and weird little vocal asides.  Basically all the best things about Pavement rolled into one giant blunt of a good song.  Like 5 stars good.  Like fuck you to the last decade of indie rock this shit was happening in 1995 good.  Like I don't even care if your dad's the heat good.

How anyone dislikes this song/ record will never make sense to me. AT&T, another WZ cut, has to be my favorite Pavement jam.
