I'm still on my nostalgic Cibo Matto kick after being blown away by their reunion show Tues night at the Rock and Roll Hotel, so I decided to track down some rarities.
Here's one I missed while browsing the import singles isle at Tower Records in 1999. It's the Moonchild single (actually listed as a "sampler" on the crazy looking cover) which features a remix by another mid-90s obsession of mine, the IDM godfathers Mouse on Mars. Thank you internet. If you remember, Moonchild was the song where you found out Miho Hatori was actually a good singer too. At the show, she abruptly stopped the song half way through, took off her sunglasses for the first time in the night, asked a group of VIP hipsters standing in the photographer section to shut up so she could focus, came back to the stage, apologized to the audience and explained that the song was important to her and she wanted to get it right for us, and then proceeded to make me fall in love with her on take two. Well, Mouse on Mars really break her focus on this version:

God loves a cheerful giver.
I saw Cibo Matto last night in Boston and I was floored by how amazing they were. I've been a fan for almost 10 years, so seeing them perform the songs I've been listening to on my ipod after all these years was really something special.
Moonchild is about a friend of Miho's that passed away too young, so I can see why she would have stopped to tell off a bunch of assholes talking through it.

They are passed their prime, if they ever did have one. My friends and I saw the show in DC on Tuesday and left with disappointment. We were looking forward to seeing the talents of a fashion forward duo that we've read about a decade ago. Instead, what we saw was an old jumper wearing "has been". Miho sounds like she is trying to carry a tune in a karoke bar. It looks like she's had one too many bon bons and swallowed her vocal cords along with it. We had to endure the horrible sound of Miho trying to sing longer than we really needed to. They need to go back into the hole they've been hibernating in for ten years. The current music scene is above par and they need not taint it.
