William Eggleston– the man responsible for legitimizing color photography as an art form! master of composition! champion of the everyday object and bar scene! artist! folklorist!– is the focus of the Corcoran’s newest exhibit, Democratic Camera, Photographs and Video, 1961–2008,
The retrospective of images, running June 20th – September 20th, features more than 150 photographs—some never-before-exhibited—made over five decades by the groundbreaking Memphis-based artist.
In addition to his gorgeous photographs, several of Eggleston’s video works have been restored and are on display- most notably his piece Stranded in Canton, a haunting vignette that reminds you how weird people are-especially int the deep south: children playing, men screaming, jazz musicians howling, gun-toting drunks sermonizing, cock fights and qualude dreams.
