On the grand scale of graphic design amazingness from 1 to 10, Stefan Sagmeister is probably seated solidly at an 11.5
The master of innovative type who has worked for everyone from Rolling Stone to HBO to your favorite band is coming to the Corcoran next Monday to give, what I am certain will be, one of the coolest lectures you're bound to hear this year (and yes, I know it is only January)

Tickets were 20 bucks and well worth which is why it sold out it but we do have a pair to give away to someone who persuades us in the comments that they deserve it more than others.
We'll notify the winner by 9am Friday and keep your eyes peeled for a special Monday feature with Stefan.

God loves a cheerful giver.
My bf just moved here from Chicago which has a much bigger art scene than DC. Ever since he moved here he has just been working hard and has been out of the scene. I am sure this would make him very happy to see some good work. Thanks!
Yeah, I just started freelancing in this city with almost ZERO (but growing) young art and design this. This is inspiration. This is real innovation. I need this. Bad.
BECAUSE STREET ART AIN'T GONNA MAKE ITSELF (and everybody needs a little inspiration sometimes).
Corcoran's rationale is too weak; that's your BF's problem, and quit lamenting that DC doesn't have a large enough art scene. It is what you make it...grab a can of spray paint and make some public art.
Hey corcoran - thanks for insulting every other artist in DC by saying that your bf could finally see some "good" work if he sees this show.
Because I stare at numbers and chemical formulas all day at my job. And because on my lunch break I sneak away and read art blogs on the lab computer and take sick days to visit galleries and pretend I have enough money to buy whatever I like. I would like to ask Mr. Sagmeister to redesign airline boarding passes, don't you think they could use some of his help?
I picked up his book ("Things I have learned in my Life so far ") in a gallery in New York because the cover made me curious. I looked a bit through it, rushed, and when I was about to put it back this girl next to me suggested I should give it another chance. I bought it and loved it. It really made me change how I look at (some) things. A few weeks later I ran into this girl again in a bar in DC. Turns out she lives here! We've been bff ever since.
Her birthday is this Saturday and an invite to his lecture would just be the most perfect present.
(I can't believe that I did not buy tickets for this event on time !!! *beating myself since 11 am this morning*)
because I don't know who he is or what this is about, and my goal for this year is to break away from the dreadful Arlington scene and actually DO stuff, even if it means I walk alone.
I got to meet Stefan back in 2008 at a small design event. He was really nice to everyone, and answers any type of question you throw at him. I felt he was one of the best speakers and story tellers I have ever come across in the inside and outside the design world. Oh yeah, to the first comment, DC has awesome designers and work, so go tell your bf to go back to Chicago, Stefan's work isn't the best, but his person philosophy and approach are what make his point of view amazing.
Blunted and Michael. I am not lamented but saying this is the reason why I would take him to something like this, he is an artist himself and would enjoy it. I think Brian stated my feelings better, dc just doesn't have a big art scene, and the one that it does have is growing, yes. You can see this growth, for example, by the expansion of Artomatic in dc over the years. To assume that he wants to see good work, does not imply that the work in dc is bad, i apologize if i did offend an artist here. Saying "good" just describes my feelings for Stefan's work. Assuming is never a good thing
as to creating work myself....i will leave that up to him...once i surprise him with these tickets...eh byt? eh!?
My wife and I live just outside of Philadelphia. I have a very small (but slowly growing) graphic design company. This would be a great trip because mondays are our day off together! I would love to be able to surprise her with tickets (since we already knew it was sold out) and make a day trip down to DC. I think it would really help inspire me and my new business venture in the new year. Also since I have never had an opportunity to see him speak before it would be an exciting first. Very excited about this!
Thank you.
