McSweeney’s Auction

McSweeney’s Auction

June 18, 2007 by Svetlana Send to a Friend Send to a Friend

McSweeney’s as run by Dave Eggers has been one of the seminal, independent publishing houses of the 00s. It has been responsible for half the books your friends told you “you have to read”, 3 (count ‘em 3) exceptional publications (Beleiver, McSweeney’s, and Wholpin, the finest DVD magazine of unseen films out there), a daily updated and wonderfully literate and hilarious site (check out the always worth revisiting McSweeney’s recommends) and so much more.Much like most independant publishing companies, McSweeney’s depended on the kindness of its (once again, independent, distributors).
Unfortunately, In December 2006 Advanced Marketing Services the parent company PGW, that distributed McSweeney’s output, folded. At the time, they owed the company $600,000, which was lost irretrievably to distributor bankruptcy. Since then they have accepted an offer from Perseus to continue their distribution but are still $130,000 in the hole. And right now (in their own words):

McSweeney’s is holding a big sale and auction to make up for $130,000 lost in a distributor bankruptcy; click here for the full story. A thousand thanks to everyone who has helped out the past few days. The sale is going great, and we are humbled by all the encouragement and support. We’ve just added one-of-a-kind pieces from John Hodgman, Miranda July, Sarah Vowell, and Marcel Dzama, and gems from Michael Chabon, Art Spiegelman, and David Foster Wallace are coming soon. Meanwhile, every single thing we’ve got is on sale, cheap.

We think you should help.
Visit there for everything from rare prints, tape recorders owned by the Managing editors of Believer, editions signed by everyone from Sarah Vowell, or doodled on by Spike Jonze, (always a favorite, Miranda July has donated one apology, one invitation and one congratulations.)

Or if you are in the mood for something a little less pricey but equally loved, go to the McSweeney’s store for everything they have from 30% to 50% off (including Nick Hornby’s Bundle pack, the “Nothing is Impossible” and “Dumbo Octopus Shirts”, instant gratification subscriptions, story collections from and edited by Michael Chavon, David Foster Wallace, Eggers Himself etc…)

and finally, continue to support.
