Happy Accidents with Shervin Lainez
August 14, 2007 by Svetlana
Talk about a time capsule: Shervin came up to me a few weeks back and said: I made a book, it is called “Happy Accidents”, and you should have a look at it.
The book itself is a nugget of a DC music scene frozen in time.
25 Local bands Shervin photographed(including his perennial favorites Laura Burhenn and Georgie James but also Bellman Barker, Telograph, Jukebox the Ghost, Pash, These United States, Mass Movement of the Moth and more) with notes from the bands themselves and a CD featuring 12 DC songs tucked neatly in.
There are only 65 copies available and they will be sold almost exclusively at the book release party this Wednesday at DC9.
At this point everyone from The City Paper to the Post Express has been salivating rather extensively about the project and there is not much new we could say (Shervin IS very young, and very talented-yes, he only started photographing upon meeting Laura Burhenn at CUA and has since become their tour/personal photographer of sorts. He WILL work for guacamole (we know, because he did it for us) if the moment feels righ. He will also burn his own Pitchfork bridges for you and employ everything from balloons to old prom dresses to lots and lots of fans to get his signature saturated, candy like shots).
Bands love him. (The book party will involve acoustic sets from Georgie James and These United States and a DJ set from Pash and is bound to be a reunion of band sorts on a school night)
We love him. (look here, and here, and here if you haven’t before)
and
The rest of the District is catching on.
So, instead of any formalities we give you:
20 Questions with Shervin! by Ericka (a friend, partner in crime and fellow shutterbug) + a few photos by Shervin.foto
and we will see you Wednesday.
01. Tell me about the first record you ever loved.
‘Bad’ by Michael Jackson. In truth.. it’s the ONLY record I ever loved.
02. What’s the best thing you’ve learned from Wikipedia this year?
How to be a decent human being.
03. Favorite ice cream/topping combination?
Peanut Butter with a little Peanut Butter
04. Would you rather go a year without MySpace or a year without YouTube?
That is like choosing between two children. I would ditch myspace, YouTube treats me better.
05. A year without (insert above answer) or a year without Mexican food?
You drive a hard bargain… I would say YouTube goes, that way at least my soul will be happy (as opposed to my stomach).
06. Favorite uncool song (not ironic uncool, but really uncool… and not the Alanis Morrissette model for irony, though you could very well answer “Ironic” by Alanis Morrissette if you want)?
” I Love Pie”
07. Predict the number of movies Lindsay Lohan has left in her career.
14 without coke… 2 with
08. What’s the best thing you learned in college?
That Jesus is selfish and he needs your money.
09. Word you’re most likely to misspell?
“Shervin” (sp?)
10. Who would you rather hug–Dick Cheney or a mountain lion?
I’d image the experience would be the same in both cases- dangerous.
11. Okay. Really. How many times do you visit MySpace each day?
Probably 9. On a busy day – 8
12. Name three things more hipster than Polaroids.
apathy, tight clothes, photography.
13. Who will take over Earth first–Oprah or Google?
Oprah could buy Google with one check, in her sleep.
14. Say something nice about your mom.
she gave birth to me, that was nice of her.
15. What’s cuter–cupcakes or baby animals?
CUPCAKES IN THE SHAPE OF BABY ANIMALS.
16. Is Earth getting warmer or are people getting colder?
The polar bears don’t care, they are all ‘where is my habitat going?!’
17. It’s burrito time and you can only have one of the following: sour cream, guacamole, or cheese. Make Sophie’s choice.
This is an impossible question. A question for the ages, for all of mankind.
(guacamole)
18. Favorite picture book?
Are there other kinds?
19. Thoughts and feelings on postmodern Western society?
fun!
20. How many times a day do you wash your hands?
I counted once.. Roughly a million.

The Bellman Barker photo is tres special and tres cool, like tres leches and arroz con leche. Guacamole, too I suppose.
