Fall Art Seasonal
September 20, 2007 by Svetlana
Send to a Friend
The Fall Art Season kicked off last weekend with a series of really world class openings:
We have already written about Chuck Close At Adamson Gallery, Wild Style At Dissident Display, Edward Hopper at the National Gallery of Art and Jenny Holzer’s Installations at The Kennedy Center.
Below you can find photos from those we attended and here is our shorthand on more unmissables:
(start being grateful you live here and now)
all other recommendations welcome
Ansel Adams @ Corcoran
Closes January 27th, 2008.
offers a series of iconic naturescapes and rare prints that span America’s premiere landscape photographer’s six decade long career.
Annie Liebowitz:A Photographer’s Life @ Corcoran
October 13th to January 13th 2008
Another blockbuster arrives to the Corcoran and includes more than 200 photographs by the celebrated photographer, encompassing well-known work made on editorial assignment as well as personal photographs of her family and close friends. “I don’t have two lives,” Leibovitz says. “This is one life, and the personal pictures and the assignment work are all part of it.”
We are already mentally there.
J.M.W. Turner @ National Gallery of Art
October 1st to January 6th 2008
Shortly after the Hopper opening, National Gallery of Art presents the most comprehensive collection of work by the man Tennyson called “The Shakespeare of landscape.”
On a slightly smaller (and mostly photographic) scale:
Check Out:
Cedric Delsaux at Project 4 Gallery whose Star Wars figurines placed in the midst of destitute Paris Landscapes are both disquieting and darkly humorous.
E. Brady Robinson’s Shift At Flashpoint a series of photographs highlighting movement and the wanderlust in the most ordinary of places.
and
Nathan Baker’s “Rapture” at Randall Scott Gallery which is a series of still lives in the midst of broken routines.
Ok, got all that? (We pinky swear to remind you as the time comes along)
and now, for last weekend’s reverie in the name of art:
first up:
Wild Style @ Dissident Display
The coolest show of the month, of course had the coolest party thrown for it. Old school hip-hop, a well tapped keg and hanging out in the rain all figured pretty strongly during the night. Plus everyone from Wonkette’s Liz Glover to Downtowner to DC Modern Luxury was there so expect some serious buzz for this (inevitably) blockbuster show.
Make sure to stop by 4th and H NE ASAP.
Chuck Close opening at Adamson / Ian Whitmore @ G Fine Art
1515 14th street is the epicenter of DC modern art and with 3 gallery opening there this past Saturday it was also the epicenter for Swedish cocktails (even if Becca and I did not succeed in scoring any of the electric blue ones) and some seriously sharply dressed, well appointed art fans.
The Chuck Close Show had David Adamson in a great mood all night (See the large photo below) and it is probably one of the more breathtaking/unnerving things we have seen in a while (bonus: sneak into the half wall before the curator’s office for a sneak nude peak at Kate Moss-up close and natural)
The Ian Whitmore party next door had everyone fawning over his candy-colored (vaguely reminiscent of Will Cotton’s pallette) paintings of both the presidential cabinet AND sheer, rainbow layered whimsy. It will leave you wanting more of it. And now.
