The Brazilian Contemporary Printmakers exhibition that’s been showing at the Hillyer since March 7th, will continue running until April 25th. A party was thrown last Friday to mark the decision. I would’ve forgotten except for this Facebook message I got the day before:
Subject line: BEER!
Message body: There will be beer.
Short, sweet and soooo full of promise. And it was true. Pony keg true. Wine and tasty piles chicken liver paté courtesy of Nora from around the way. DJ Neville Chamberlain was also in the house playing, like, Brazilian music, just like he do every third thursday at Café Saint Ex. A couple hours and about 3 or 4 plastic cups of whatever it took, the mix of young and older professional types were done checking the art and took to dancing (at various degrees of commitment).
The Hillyer Art Space is tucked deep in the alley behind the Phillips Collection buildings on 21st Street, a few blocks above Massachusetts Avenue. This is the Embassy Row side of DuPont Circle; you can’t really ask for a better place to stroll through in the district, especially during perfect after-work weather day like last Friday’s. The majority of the pieces showing at the Hillyer are wall mounted and 2-D, running the gamut of textures from handmade and coarse to gelatinous and gooey. The clever little stand out work for me was this interactive puzzle jookie that goes for all three dimensions.
The beer and the dj are gone but the this collection is up for a couple more weeks.

Actually, the puzzle thing was not supposed to be interactive, it’s present appearance is attributable to some unsolicited interaction at the first opening.
