Before the David Lynch's and Matthew Barneys entered and poisoned our collective subconscious Maya Deren (nee Eleanora Derenkowsky), the stone cold fox of 1940s avant-garde made challenging, dream-like movies, cavorted around with Marcel Duchamp, Anais Nin and Andre Breton, all the while taking limber Japanese dancers for lovers and never combing her hair but always looking almost hotter than Anna Magnani. It is a-ok to be jealous, I know I am.
